Keep This Book Handy

I read a lot of books. After finishing, some are donated to the local library, a larger number gain a place on my bookshelf and a very select few I keep on my desk because I know I will want those books handy for future reference. Do It! Marketing by David Newman stays on my desk.

This book is full of wonderful marketing lessons - 77 powerful and actionable ideas. And then there is a 21 day marketing launch plan that takes you step by step through the process of developing and launching a marketing plan tailored just for you and your business. And what's in the book is supplemented by a significant amount of additional information available online.

Mr. Newman's writing style of full of energy. You feel like he is sitting across the desk talking directly to you. He writes in a very breezy and at times humorous style. In addition, you will find a number of guest articles scattered throughout the book. The book is a fun and enjoyable read. But the lessons are very serious and if you implement just a fraction of what is taught in this book, it will make a real difference in your business.

The information is based on Mr. Newman's years of hands on experience. Some of the ideas and tips are counterintuitive, but you need to approach all of them with an open mind. Under Tip # 73, Move Up, he suggests doubling your price. His advice is "Be expensive or be free." Unfortunately, most people who start out in business think they can compete on low price. As he astutely points out, "Businesses that compete on price lose. Period." "Price doesn't find clients. Value finds clients."

Here are a couple of other very important tips from the book.
Quit overselling. Don't push your product/service. "Content comes before commerce. Offer solutions, answers, strategies, templates, tools , and ideas - not sales messages." "The new reality is: First you earn their attention. Then you earn their money."

This one is counter to what all sales people have been taught - "Stop wasting your time following up". The point is if you are speaking to the right prospect - one who has the need, wants and is capable of buying a solution, you will not need to constantly follow up. An excellent idea/lesson.

Focus on Strategy, not tactics. Far too many people are seeking the latest bright shinning object that will do the marketing for them. They are seeking a tactic, not using a strategy to build sales. " ...tactical business owners tend to be scattered." Most business owners will save themselves a lot of time, money and energy by following this idea.

This is really a super book for any business wanting to improve their marketing and sales. Of course the greatest value will come from implementing the ideas and the 21 Day Marketing Launch Plan. These concepts are simple but not simplistic. And as Mr. Newman points out numerous times, they are not necessarily easy - they require work. But you will have a real jump start by following the ideas in this book. You will be working on what really works.

Way Too general...Where's the Beef?

I bought this book expecting some great specific ideas that would potentially help my small business. Judging by reviews, this book looked like a real winner. Wow, I'm simply floored that this extremely general and rarely specific book got a 5-star average.
In spots, the book felt like it was designed to help those simply THINKING about starting a business. I also didn't find the book to be particularly organized as some reviewers did. It had a scattershot feel throughout and I got zero from it.
I'm finding more difficult to trust Amazon reviews as this book simply had very little bankable substance. The 77 ideas weren't typically even ideas....just random thoughts in my opinion.
When I think of an idea...I'm thinking about a specific action that was taken to advance the ball of my business. I'm not trying to undercut the author at all, but if your looking for real ideas that can potentially work for your business? This book doesn't have them. I'm trying to think of even ONE original idea...and I can't do it.

After I received the book I couldn't put it down. I finished it in two evenings. I found all of the information useful. He is very entertaining as well. For a business book he made it interesting. I would recommend this book to any business owner, new or experienced. Well worth the time to read. I've now decided to start reading his blog.

Extraordinary and Insightful

Just finished reading the book. I've read lots of self-help like books but nothing like this. The teachings are both powerful and practical. The examples and stories bring a depth of understanding that is missing in so much of this genre. The end of the book also contains a nine week strategy guide to show you how to apply the principles to your every day life. For anyone interested in creating permanent change in their life, this is a must read. A great book!

As an avid book reader, and a personal development junkie, I have to say that this book is one I would consider an instant classic. Joey has a unique ability to break down complicated theories into something a child could understand. His blend of eastern and western philosophy, begins to bring complete clarity into you conscious mind.

The Inner Matrix is a fascinating book about mind, emotions, body and spirit! One of the amazing things about this book is how it addresses emotion. I realized as I read it that no one really has answers about what to do with those uncomfortable emotions that none of us want to face. His practices for shifting out of stressful patterns like anger and anxiety were amazing! I also found his insight into optimizing spiritual connection to be truly insightful and his discussion of the impact and importance of living a spiritually connected life to be profound. What an inspiring read!

Thankfully Not a Greek Tragedy

There's certainly never a good time to lose your mother, but when you're not yet sixteen and you've never known your father, it can't be one of the best. Melon is a troubled and troubling girl, but a highly engaging and often funny teenager. There's a hopefulness here, and a battling instinct that never gets lost - this is partly a story about a rite of passage, partly one of survival. Julie Mayhew's deftness of touch keeps a dark story moving, stops it from being gloomy. Very highly recommended read.

About the Author
BO Myint Win is a Principal Geotechnical Engineer in Bullen Consultants Ltd, United Kingdom. He obtained his B.Sc (Geology) from the University of Rangoon and received a Postgraduate Diploma in Hydrogeology from University College London and M.Sc. degree from the University of London. He obtained his Ph.D in Civil Engineering from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. Dr. Bo is a Fellow of the Geological Society, London, Chartered Geologist and also a European Geologist. He has published over 60 papers in international conferences and journals. He has been working as consultant for several reclamation and soil improvement projects in Singapore and the Far East.

Dr. CHU Jian is currently an Associate Professor in the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. He obtained his Ph.D. from the University of New South Wales, Australia. He has 19 years of research and consulting experiences in geotechnical engineering, particularly in the areas of laboratory and in-situ testing, engineering properties of soils, soil improvement and land reclamation. He has developed two vertical drain testers and has published over 70 papers in international journals or conferences.

Dr. LOW Bak Kong is currently an Associate Professor in the School of Civil & Environmental Engineering, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. He received his B.S. and M.S. degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley. His research and teaching interest include slope stability, soil improvement and geotechnical reliability analysis. He has published papers on these topics in international journals and conferences.

Victor Choa is currently Professor and Dean of Admissions at the Nanyang Technological University of Singapore. He obtained his B.A. and M.A. from the University of Cambridge, M.Sc. from the University of Birmingham and Ph.D. from the National University of Singapore. Professor Choa has been active in teaching, research and consulting in the field of geotechnical engineering in general and land reclamation and soil improvement in particular. He has been engaged as a consultant in many international civil engineering projects and has authored over 100 technical papers in geotechnical engineering.

10 Second Interview: A Few Words with Gillian Flynn

Q: Do you prefer writing novels or reviewing?
A: I think writing is more pure--and actually a bit easier for me. It's just me and my laptop, not me and my laptop and a TV show that 30 people have worked on. Reviewing keeps you sharp--I can hardly watch or read anything without taking notes now--but plain old writing I find actually relaxing.

Q: Do think your writing is influenced more by books that you have read, or shows/movies that you have seen?
A: My mom spent her career as a reading teacher and my dad is a retired film professor, so I was really steeped in both books and movies growing up. To this day, when I get my dad on the phone, pretty much his first sentence is "Seen anything good lately?" I love putting words together (I've never met a simile I didn't like), but when I write I often think in "scenes"--I want these two people, in a dirty bar, with this song playing in the background.

Q: I hear you are working on your second book...is it is too early to ask what it's about?
A: I'm still playing around with the whole plot--when I wrote Sharp Objects, I wasn't even sure who the killer was for a bit. But I can say [the new book] has to do with family loyalty, false memories, a wrenching murder trial, and a dash of good 'ole 1980s hair metal and devil worship.

Q: What is your writing process like? Have you changed anything about how you work since your first book?
A: My writing process is incredibly inefficient, and hasn't changed between books. I really don't outline: I know basically how I want the story to start, and vaguely how I want it to end (though like I said, with Sharp Objects even that changed!). Then I just write: Some characters I start finding more interesting, some less. I write entire swaths that I pretty much know I'll cut. I have an entire file of "deleted scenes." I guess the one thing that has physically changed is I moved into a new place since my first book--it has a great bathtub, and I'll prop my laptop up and write in the bath for hours. Which is, admittedly, weird.

Flynn's debut novel focuses on an emotionally fragile young woman whose sanity is being severely tested by family dysfunction, smalltown incivility and murder. It is a mesmerizing psychological thriller that is also quite disturbing and, thanks to reader Lee's chillingly effective rendition, at times almost unbearably so. Camille Preaker, a novice reporter with a history of self-mutilation, is sent to her hometown in Missouri to cover the murder of one teenage girl and the disappearance of another. There, she must face a variety of monsters from the past and the present, including her aloof and patronizing mother, her obnoxiously precocious 13-year-old stepsister who dabbles in drugs, sex and humiliation, and an unknown serial killer whose mutilated victims bring back haunting memories. Lee's interpretation of mom enhances the character's detachment and airy state of denial to an infuriating degree. And her abrupt change of pace when Camille suddenly begins chanting the words carved on her body is hair-raising. But the voice Lee gives to the stepsister—tinged with a sarcastic, cynical and downright evil girly singsong—makes one's blood run cold.

A Hard-Boiled Heroine

When men fight, according to first novelist Gillian Flynn, they tend to bludgeon one another in blunt contests of strength, like good-natured warriors facing off in an athletic contest. Women fight in a much nastier fashion, she asserts, clawing, biting and using whatever other sharp objects are available to achieve domination over their female rivals. If you're willing to buy into Flynn's scathing portrayal of the so-called gentler sex, you'll surely be sucked into this dark mystery/thriller.

Camille Preaker, a reporter for an obscure Chicago newspaper, is assigned to investigate the recent murders of two young girls in her claustrophobic Missouri hometown. Besides overcoming the natural wariness the townsfolk exhibit toward a nosy journalist, Camille must face down her dysfunctional family - a controlling mother, distant step-father and a disturbed, thirteen-year-old step-sister whose catty group of friends makes the "Mean Girls" crowd look like a troup of Brownies. The closer Camille gets to cracking this grisly mystery, the harder she struggles to keep her horde of inner demons at bay and the more she begins to fear for her own safety.

If judged purely by the intensity of its suspense and page-turning quotient, "Sharp Objects" would easily merit five stars. Flynn taps into the psychological horror generated by a twisted family in a way that electrifies the narrative, reminding me of Dean Koontz in that regard. I had trouble, though, accepting the unlikely logistics behind the crimes and found certain characters to be so over-the-top as to strain credibility. These quibbles aside, Gillian Flynn already has mastered a fast-paced and hard-boiled writing style that's perfectly suited for the suspense genre, and she has created a fascinating heroine who could form the centerpiece for a winning series.

Really Nice First-Novel From Author of "Gone Girl" Gillian Flynn

NO SPOILERS IN THIS REVIEW: Really nice first novel from this author, with a very defined 3-act structure. This one is written entirely in first-person, from only the main character's point of view. Act 1 sets the stage, but feels a bit disconnected. I would say Act 2 doesn't really begin until around page 50, when a big plot point is revealed. Prior to page 50 I found myself wondering "where is this going?" and after page 50, a few random facts in the novel get explained and then it really starts to come together. After that, it is a smooth ride downhill: a fast, engrossing read. So much so that you might find yourself ignoring your family members just to get to the end of this book. A girlfriend of mine is about to go on tour, and I had to finish reading this so I could lend it to her before she left. Once you read a good book, you need someone else to experience it with you, right?

Act 2 lasts for nearly the rest of the book until the last 20 pages or so, when Gillian Flynn surprises us again. Of course, if she gave you the ending you expected, it wouldn't be a good book, right? I will note that the ending is rather hastily wrapped up, and for me at least, my feelings about the characters don't really blossom as the could have with a more robust ending. I will say that she likely received this feedback from readers and learned from it, because all these "complaints" are corrected prior to her novel "Gone Girl." Gone Girl is like the older, rarer vintage of a really nice wine.

All in all, even Stephen King praised Sharp Objects as an excellent first effort, and it's a book worthy of your attention whether you're already a Gillian Flynn fan, or you just like suspenseful, thrilling novels. Once you've picked this one up, move on to "Gone Girl" and don't see the movie until you've read the book!

The Whining of Adults should be the title.

First off, the title does not reflect the story. The concept of "cutters" is what I thought the book would be about but it is only a sideline thought. If you read a lot, you'll pick out at least one or two people near the beginning who could be the murderer. I did, and I was right. I was greatly disappointed that there wasn't any character development to speak of, no connection to any of the characters. This is the main reason I wasn't impressed with the story. There were a couple of sex scenarios inserted in the story, which were not needed. They felt disjointed and had no purpose.

On the plus side, it is a quick read. And without revealing any spoilers, I must say that the hiding place for the teeth was very clever.

The long history of interpretation of the three Johannine letters has been largely characterized, at least since Irenaeus in the late second century, by the assumption that the Elder was addressing the Gnostic heresy. In recent years, particularly with the work of Raymond Brown, attention has been focused on the internal schism within the Johannine (or Beloved Disciple’s) community, thus taking the first epistle as a corrective to secessionists’ misguided attempts to read the Gospel of John in an “advanced,” spiritualizing manner.

Birger Olsson returns to a less common perspective, one that views the crisis facing the Elder as a wholly “intra-Jewish” problem. The Johannine community comprised Jewish believers who regarded Jesus as the long-promised Messiah of Israel, but at some point in the community’s life, under the leadership of one Diotrephes, some members of the community chose to reject this conviction and to entice other members to do likewise. Olsson anchors his thoroughgoing interpretation of the three letters in this conflict among Jewish Christians over the nature of the Messiah and the renewal of Israel’s ancient covenant. Among other things, this implies that the letters were written in reverse order of their numbering.
