"USO" books are excellent for learning and/or reviewing what you have learned.

I spent 3 months in Buenos Aires this past summer studying Spanish. The school that I attended did not use textbooks on a daily basis but they did occasionally use exercises from the series of "USO de la gramática española" (elemental, intermedio, and avanzado). Several of the instructors commented that they were the best grammar books out there.

I have to say that I agree. Each "tema" (chapter) is brief, yet comprehensive and concise and the progression of the chapters is well designed. These textbooks were written in Spain and are completely in Spanish. Therefore, if you have absolutely no background in Spanish, then they might not be the books for you. If you have had some high school Spanish or a semester or two of college Spanish, then these books are an excellent resource.

Important note: Be sure to purchase the corresponding answer key "USO de la gramática española clave" (elemental, intermedio, and avanzado). Unfortunately, the books themselves do not come with the answer key and must be purchased separately.

The vultures had mysteriously turned from scavengers to killers. No one knew why. These awful, scary, deadly creatures were probably the final blow that was leading to the collapse of Matt’s clan.

Matt was a Meerkat—those smallish African animals that humans seem to find cute and interesting. Matt, like all Kats, had his own distinct personality and skills. He had always been shy and could be a bit too rigid once he had a plan in mind. But an inherent sense of loyalty, a soft smile, and skills he always used to help the group had made him much appreciated. He had usually enjoyed life, and most of the time life had enjoyed him back. But then . . .

Because the rain seemed to have disappeared, his clan of fuzzy little creatures no longer had enough food for everyone. At least once a day, Matt ate less so the young and old and weak could have more. But that hardly made even a small contribution to solving the problem. The increase in the number of predators was—well, Matt had never seen anything like it. A few Kats said it was all connected. Less rain meant less food, which was leading to strange and unpredictable changes in predator behavior. But who knew for sure?
 
They could not seem to agree upon, much less bring alive, any new big ideas to deal with the new problems. For Matt and many others, that was incredibly frustrating. Making matters even worse, getting the most routine daily work done was proving more and more difficult.
 
It was not as if Matt never heard any promising new ideas. He had two very creative friends, Tanya and Ago, who had come up with a possible way to find more food and waste less, and a potential method of spotting predators faster than before. But both Kats ran into a wall of “that’s not the way we do things here,” a reaction that, considering the circumstances, made no sense. Matt tried to pitch in and show others why such an argument was illogical. He talked to Kats he knew the best, those born in litters about the same time as he was. He talked to his Family Chief. And he got nowhere.
 
Matt was so tired. Because he was respected, he was asked by one of the big bosses—an Alpha—to take on this project and that project and another. The toll on him added up. He was not at all the type who walked through his days quietly or loudly angry at the world. Yet
here he was . . .

Introduction
 
This story is about important issues almost all of us are now facing: The rate of change is going up, that fact can be hard to see clearly or to deal with well, and when we cannot find ways to avoid hazards, grasp opportunities, and produce the results we all truly value—all of which we know is possible because some people do it—life can become quite unpleasant.
We have chosen a fable format here—a story with a whole cast of characters, including Matt—because fables can take on big issues and be useful for many people. And the issues here really are big. To understand how we can get better outcomes, we need to more clearly understand how organizations rise, why they often eventually struggle no matter their past success, and why they can fall. We need more clarity about how a few rise once again to grow, fulfill their mission, create great jobs and services and wealth. It helps to see the role that discipline, planning, reliability, and efficiency play in these stories. And the role of passion, vision, engagement, speed, agility, and culture. And there is the issue of management versus leadership—and the latter not from just a few people in big corner offices.
 
Yes, yes, we know that this is a bit much for a short book. And, yes, many others have had much to say about these issues. But we think there is too much fog around some fundamental points that relate to success today. Only when we begin to lift that fog do we have a chance of turning twenty-first-century challenges and threats into exciting opportunities—for our businesses, governments, nonprofits, and ourselves. We could go on and on talking about the many decades of research underlying the ideas and insights in this story. But a discussion of that here could undermine our goals of being short, thought-provoking, useful, and fun.

I wish I was a Meerkat!

I don't think the purpose of this book was to make me wish that I was a meerkat, but the meerkats in this book are open to trying a change in order to survive. I work in environment where the alphas and the betas (the names of the leaders in the book) are absolutely not open to trying anything new that does not come from the top, so yes, I wish I was a member of the tribe of meerkats in the book.

This little story about meerkats and their environment changing in unexpected ways, was the perfect fable to see how organizations can rise and fall, and re-rise. The story is very interesting and really well written. Throughout the entire story I was comparing the meerkat's situations to situations I have been in.

The story does a great job of showing how management and leadership need to be used in the same environment in order to survive these changing times. In bigger companies I've seen managers that call themselves leaders. They simply do not understand that they are not the same thing.

I have also seen leaders that were so far from reality, they never delivered anything. They made a ton of motion but never got anything implemented. Something needs to be delivered eventually, and it should be what the user needs, not what the so called leader thinks the user needs.

This book does an excellent job of showing the dynamics of the environments and how different types of change call for different types of leaders and managers.

If you have read Accelerate, you know this story. What is different about this is how the story is delivered. It also has a much greater chance of being read if you hand it off to a friend. I pretty much could predict what was going to happen next in the story because I read Accelerate, but that did not make it any less enjoyable. To tell you the truth, this was like a fresh of breath air. I read so many business and technical books, that this is the first book I have picked up in a long time that I wish was longer!!!

If you work, you should read this. Period.

What Would the Meerkats Do?

That's Not How We Do It Here! is a quick read, but the book presents some good lessons in the important distinctions between management and leadership. The authors also detail the roles that these two aspects of the business world play in enterprises of differing sizes and levels of complexity. The entire narrative is framed about the story of a group of meerkats and how management, leadership, and the lack of both deeply affect the meerkat community. So, the book is constructed like a business parable. I've read a number of books about organization structure and best practices, and this is one of the lighter ones; however, the approach that the authors take is also highly effective and really engages the reader in making connections between the meerkat "communities" and the corporate world.

For inspiration not instruction

This latest book from Kotter and Rathgeber is a quick, inspiring, entertaining read. Written as a fable about a clan of meerkats, the book addresses how entrepreneurial startups and mature organizations alike can thrive in an ever-changing business environment. The story highlights such issues as dealing with change, handling increasing organizational complexities that come with growth, fostering teamwork across departmental silos, encouraging innovation, and becoming a learning organization. The key lesson of the book is the difference between leading and managing and the need for both if an organization is to thrive. There is a short section at the end of the book that outlines the concepts illustrated in the fable. This is not a how-to book, however. Readers will need to refer to Kotter’s more detailed works for guidance on how to implement the approach described in this book’s storyline. The value of this book is as a tool to introduce readers to the need to consider the premises introduced through the fable. Having managers at all levels read this book and discuss as a group can initiate stimulating conversations, innovative ideas, and a desire to act.

A modern survey of Markan study

Daniel J. Harrington's book, What Are They Saying about Mark? is a continuation of Frank J. Matera's 1987 work of the same name in which those studying Mark's gospel can learn the "ultimate realities...in ancient and present day religious and political struggles." (Harrington, 2) While both take a broad survey of scholarly works commenting on the Gospel According to Mark, Harrington chooses to deal with those studies and materials written after Matera's work was published in 1985 so as to add to the discussions on topics related to studying and better understanding Mark in the realm of general, vice exegetical, study. (Harrington, 4) Mark's Gospel is rich with debatable topics and interpretation. Each of these scholarly discussions brings a unique flavor and interpretation to this seemingly short gospel and ultimately, makes the faith in Jesus Christ richer and more attainable to all who choose to follow.

While topics of setting, Christology, disciples, composition, and narrative are all addressed in this book, it was done in a different format and under chapter headings than the original Matera work. Harrington's first chapter is designed to look backward, toward the survey conducted by Matera whose work focused on Markan commentary from the 1960s. Additionally, this opening chapter explores the change in Markan scholarship since Matera's original work, while providing commentary on his own. The second chapter is a brief look at modern literary criticism. Next, Harrington conducts a theological overview of several topics such as Christology, discipleship and faith, just to name a few. The fourth chapter takes a historical approach to the Gospel by examining the text through the lenses of those texts available at the time of Mark's writing as well as the setting as it relates to his biological narrative of Jesus. The final chapter captures some of the more engaging topics, such as feminism, political, and pastoral, that have come along in the last few decades. Harrington also provides a four page bibliography for further academic study.

A Masterpiece

Very well written and well organized comprehensive review. The book is aimed at a specialist audience, but is accessible to anyone who has basic knowledge of evolutionary theory. Perhaps the best aspect of the book is the author's description of how the conclusions discussed were reached, his thorough discussion of alternative ideas, and his willingness to admit what cannot be concluded from available evidence.

The author barely discusses humans, but for anyone interested in how sexual selection has affected our species, get the real story of how sexual selection actually works and then start to think for yourself.

Must read, Must read, Must read , changed my life ... this book inspires one to meditate, to understand the various mysteries of the world, it opens up a plane that one cannot comprehend at all. It is not a book of magic or miracles it is something beyond. No words to describe this book, I will always be indebted to Shivangini Ma and bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba just for this book. The Only Book of its Kind

I was approached by Sathya Sai Baba the same way Shivangini was and have had many of the same experiences. As of late 2015, I’m only 2 ½ years into this journey, so I still have a way to go.

This is the best book of its kind I’ve found. Actually, the only book of its kind. Shivangini and Gyani record her daily, internal communication with Sai Baba, including the instructions he gave her, feedback, visions and their meaning, and everyday advice. It’s a fascinating account, all the more so because I happen to be living it myself.

A familiar cultural presence for people the world over, “the whiteman” has come to personify the legacy of colonialism, the face of Western modernity, and the force of globalization. Focusing on the cultural meanings of whitemen in the Orokaiva society of Papua New Guinea, this book provides a fresh approach to understanding how race is symbolically constructed and why racial stereotypes endure in the face of counterevidence.

While Papua New Guinea’s resident white population has been severely reduced due to postcolonial white flight, the whiteman remains a significant racial and cultural other here—not only as an archetype of power and wealth in the modern arena, but also as a foil for people’s evaluations of themselves within vernacular frames of meaning. As Ira Bashkow explains, ideas of self versus other need not always be antihumanistic or deprecatory, but can be a creative and potentially constructive part of all cultures.

An intellectual treat

Here is an intellectual treat of the first order. I envy you - it's still in front of you. Let me say - I am not an anthropologist or an expert on Papua New Guinea, just a general reader.

Don't be put off by lack of familiarity with the Orakaiva people or lack of background on Papua New Guinea.
Bashkow will explain whatever you need to know, clearly and without jargon. What you will get is the product of years of fieldwork living in a little known corner of the world.
But the author's focus is directed at how the Orakaiva see whitepeople (mostly people with white skin, but including cultural outsiders such as Africans, 'black' white people). While absorbing details about this unfamiliar Melanesian world, you'll be making all sorts of connections to the way The Other is viewed in places you are familiar with.

Let me try to substantiate my praise of the book by offering you a tidbit from the introduction. Bashkow is concerned to justify his methods. Surely, as a whiteman himself, the Orakaiva could not be expected to tell him what they really think about whitemen. After all, it's not as if he could blend into the background. He describes himself as sort of like Ralph Ellison's invisible man - in reverse, the object of general attention everywhere he went. I expected Bashkow to describe how he made friends and worked his way into the hearts of the Orakaiva. But !!! he embraces the inequality
in the situation, explaining that the standard anthropologist is writing a romance when s/he describes the union of anthropolgist and 'primitive'. This observation was enough to make me reconsider how this preference for 'romance' has contaminated all previous anthropology. By the way, please do not assume that Bashkow is any way a 'conservative' just because he refuses to believe that the inequality in anthropological fieldwork situations cannot be put aside.

#131 The Case of the Two-Cent Candy

Years ago, I wrote about a retail store in the Palo Alto environs—a good one, which had a box of two-cent candies at the checkout. I subsequently remember that "little" parting gesture of the two-cent candy as a symbol of all that is Excellent at that store. Dozens of people who have attended seminars of mine—from retailers to bankers to plumbing-supply-house owners—have come up to remind me, sometimes 15 or 20 years later, of "the two-cent candy story," and to tell me how it had a sizable impact on how they did business, metaphorically and in fact.

Well, the Two-Cent Candy Phenomenon has struck again—with oomph and in the most unlikely of places.

For years Singapore's "brand" has more or less been Southeast Asia's "place that works." Its legendary operational efficiency in all it does has attracted businesses of all sorts to set up shop there. But as "the rest" in the geographic neighborhood closed the efficiency gap, and China continued to rise-race-soar, Singapore decided a couple of years ago to "rebrand" itself as not only a place that works but also as an exciting, "with it" city. (I was a participant in an early rebranding conference that also featured the likes of the late Anita Roddick, Deepak Chopra, and Infosys founder and superman N. R. Narayana Murthy.)

Singapore's fabled operating efficiency starts, as indeed it should, at ports of entry—the airport being a prime example. From immigration to baggage claim to transportation downtown, the services are unmatched anywhere in the world for speed and efficiency.

Saga . . .

Immigration services in Thailand, three days before a trip to Singapore, were a pain. ("Memorable.") And entering Russia some months ago was hardly a walk in the park, either. To be sure, and especially after 9/11, entry to the United States has not been a process you'd mistake for arriving at Disneyland, nor marked by an attitude that shouted "Welcome, honored guest."

Singapore immigration services, on the other hand:

The entry form was a marvel of simplicity.

The lines were short, very short, with more than adequate staffing.

The process was simple and unobtrusive.

And:

The immigration officer could have easily gotten work at Starbucks; she was all smiles and courtesy.

And:

Yes!

Yes!

And . . . yes!

There was a little candy jar at each Immigration portal!

The "candy jar message" in a dozen ways:

"Welcome to Singapore, Tom!! We are absolutely beside ourselves with delight that you have decided to come here!"

Wow!

Wow!

Wow!

Ask yourself . . . now:

What is my (personal, department, project, restaurant, law firm) "Two-Cent Candy"?

Does every part of the process of working with us/me include two-cent candies?

Do we, as a group, "think two-cent candies"?

Operationalizing: Make "two-centing it" part and parcel of "the way we do business around here." Don't go light on the so-called substance—but do remember that . . . perception is reality . . . and perception is shaped by two-cent candies as much as by that so-called hard substance.

Start: Have your staff collect "two-cent candy stories" for the next two weeks in their routine "life" transactions. Share those stories. Translate into "our world." And implement.

Repeat regularly.

Forever.

(Recession or no recession—you can afford two cents.)

(In fact, it is a particularly Brilliant Idea for a recession—you doubtless don't maximize Two-Cent Opportunities. And what opportunities they are.)

Very helpful and very useful with one caveat...

I've been listening to Tom's "The Little Big Things" and reading along on the Kindle version. Tom likes to zero in on simple ideas that can have a powerful impact on the success of a business (small, medium or large). This is a really healthy approach to helping businesses succeed. Folks like to read, absorb and apply...not spend all kinds of time trying to understand graphs, analyses, and information presented all-too-often intended to impress than to assist. So Tom scores very big points throughout in getting us immediately useable information.

There is one item I strongly disagree with in the book. Tom says:

"I argue here and elsewhere that the *only* effective source of innovation is pissed-off people! Hence, bite your tongue and cherish such misfits!" (the word *only* was in italics presumably for emphasis)

I'm sure some points of innovation come from pissed-off people, and I imagine Tom has considerably more examples of this than I do. But I'm also sure superb innovation has come from those not pissed-off at all. This I've seen with my own eyeballs on quite a few occasions. And sometimes these pissed-off misfits are just that: pissed-off misfits with no innovation whatsoever in their space. Quite the contrary, some are involved with undoing innovation, creativity and productivity. So I'm not on the look-out for pissed-off misfits nor should you be. Be on the look-out for innovation in whatever form it presents itself. Then check it out, test it out and use it liberally when you see it gets the desired results.

538 pages of incoherent rant

I've never seen so many font sizes, exclamation points and redundancy in one book. There is nothing new here, and what IS here is so mercilessly pounded on that you would have to be severely ADHD to get anything out of it. A typical paragraph: "Communicate. Communicate. Communicate. Communicate. Communicate. Communicate. Communicate. Communicate." (I wish I was exaggerating).

I made it to page 85 before swearing I would never read another Tom Peters book as long as I live. The thought of trying to make it through the remaining 453 pages made me want to pull my eyeballs out. The Little Big Things becomes the fourth book I've ever ordered from Amazon that I am returning, and the second this week. Must be a bad week for business books.

You're better off buying a used copy of The Search for Excellence, even though many of the companies featured in that book have been out of business so long that under-40 readers won't have ever heard of them.

Quick and very practical ways to stand out

As I started reading this book, I was disappointed. I didn't like the short, choppy parts. Nor did I like the multiple fonts. The book didn't seem to flow.

Then I thought back on Tom Peters' introduction. He says that this book is written in a blogging style and isn't meant to be read like a regular book. He also says that he doesn't expect all his items to resonate with the reader. He wishes us to pick up a few.

Halfway through the book, I `got it' and started enjoying the lists.

The mark of a true visionary author is if he:

**makes the reader stop and think
**gives practical and very doable advice.

Tom Peters succeeded with both of these.

Some of the "little big things" that I particularly enjoyed:

#36 - Call, don't email, 25-20 people in the next 5 days to thank them for all their help. Make a point to do this a few times a year.
#68 - Just say yes!
#115 - Ask and then ask again.

While there is nothing new or earth shattering in this book, it's a good read to help stimulate actionable ideas.
