History Today (of the First Edition)

First published in 1983, and then revised and reissued as a Second Edition in 1991, Professor Tittler¿s Seminar Study has established itself as arguably the best short introduction to the reign of Mary I (1553-58). The author, an expert in the mid-Tudor period, addresses the deceptively simple question of whether Mary¿s reign was really, as some historians claim, just ¿a sterile interlude¿ in Tudor history. It is a balanced account of the reign: Robert Tittler acknowledges the negative aspects of Mary¿s rule but he also points to its more positive features. He argues that some of these, particularly in religion, came to nothing because of Mary¿s untimely death; others were brought to fruition by Mary¿s successor, Elizabeth I, who claimed the credit.

The core of the text is devoted to the main themes and events of Mary¿s reign: the negotiations for a Spanish match, religion and the Catholic restoration, foreign affairs and the workings of Marian government. However, the reconstruction of historical events is balanced by the author¿s consideration of the history of ideas and social and economic conditions. The text is supplemented by three helpful genealogies and a glossary of specialist terms.

I enjoyed this book. It was a precise no frills account of the reign of Queen Mary the First. I thought the book was mgood because it didn't bog you down with frills and thrills but a clear precise account of her reign. Very good book.

Humankind has always been interested in news, notes New York University journalism professor Stephens, and in this impressive work he shows how that interest has been satisfied. Although it is impossible to provide examples of the oral transmission of news from preliterate societies before the third millennium B.C., the author demonstrates it in action among primitives in the 19th and 20th centuries. Thence he moves to handwritten news, sometimes in personal letters, sometimes in public notices, like the acta posted and copied in ancient Rome and the newsletters written in Renaissance Venice, which were the immediate predecessors of newspapers. News in print followed quickly after the invention of movable type and newspapers proliferated, until they began to be supplemented, if not supplanted, by the electronic media. This solid history is made even more absorbing by such sidelights as the universal fascination with gossip, gore and the supernatural and trenchant observations about the relationship between society and the news it consumes.

He proffers a broader social focus on the changing form and function of news and gives us the world view, not just that of America. He deftly traces news from primitive societies to early modern Europe up through electronic media today. His final chapter, "A Surfeit of Data," perceptively and concisely sums up the gains and losses of our current journalistic forms. His version also is less trenchant and analytical than Michael Schudson's similarly focused Discovering the News : A Social History of American Newspapers (Basic, 1978). Se trata de una mezcla interesante entre thriller y romance, apta para las personas que no consumimos literatura romántica, y un descanso para los consumidores -como es mi caso- de thrillers bastante "negros".-
La trama es un puzzle bien construido, los lugares interesantes, y la construcción de los personajes, solvente psicológicamente.
Obviamente, en el momento en que aparece una mujer solitaria y un hombre varonil , ya tenemos el final. Pero para llegar a ese final hay sucesos bien desarrollados e interesantes.
