About the Author
Lorraine Hansberry was the youngest American playwright ever to win the Best American Play Award from the New York Drama Critics' Circle. Her other worksinclude The Sign in Sidney Brustein's Window and Les Blancs. She died of cancer at thirty-four.

Much more powerful than Raisin in the Sun

Lorraine Hansberry is best remembered for "Raisin in the Sun" which, even today, many feel is a strong statement against racism. However, "Raisin" pales in comparison to "Les Blancs", a much more militant and radical statement which, I have not doubt, must have genuinely frightened the liberal establishment in the 1960's. This play was decades ahead of it's time and it is no wonder that the more comfortable "Raisin" is what Ms Hansberry is mostly remembered for. Anyone who knows both of these works will realize that the world lost a great treasure when cancer stole this brilliant African-American lesbian's life from us when she was just 34. (Although Ms. Hansberry, married a white Jewish man, Robert Nemiroff in 1953, the couple separated in 1957 and divorced in 1964. She wrote some articles for "The Ladder", the first lesbian periodical in the United States, in the late 1950's.)

Beautiful work by a great artist

Beautiful work by a great artist. Died way too young. She was ahead of her time. Her plays are relevant today. From the introduction: " Hansberry once said in an interview that her goal as a dramatist was to “reach a little closer to people, to see if we can share some illumination about each other.”

Buy if interested in racial justice and/or Hansberry's development as a writer

Hansberry was a great writer who wrote extensively about racial injustice in the United States. These plays continue her condemnation of racism past and present. In Les Blancs Hansberry writes primarily about the freedom struggle in Africa. The "problem" with this is that it is a play, and it requires a good imagination or having seen the play to fully visualize some the role of the unnamed and only woman character, who is so vital to the play that she might be considered the most important character.

More problematical for me is her satire of the liberal American journalist who plays a recurring if minor role. It is sometimes an all-too-true indictment and it reflects her justified anger and despair at the state of race relations in America at the end of the sixties, but it is a cardboard figure and therefore potentially polarizing. I have read that it did so at the first performance in 1970. I did not find it polarizing, more sad that Hansberry seemed to have lost hope, but as satires go, it was more heavy handed than most.

Planets Are Beautiful

The cover was awesome. And so were the pictures inside. Planets are simply the most awe-inspiring, wondrous entities besides the human body and don't need any embellishment. Because they are so amazing, and not tangible to us, they are concepts that can be hard to grasp. Most of us are essentially relying on trust that they a) exist and b) are as wonderful as scientists say they are. This book provided a grounded, factual overview of the main properties of the most "famous" planets in our solar system - perfect for an elementary school aged child. There was no muss or fuss. It wasn't overly complicated like so many books on the planets are. And yet it managed to convey the scale and capability of our solar system. In fact, I learned a few things. :-)

Great for beginner Astronomers :)

It is a cute little book and it the amount of information is just right for a young child who is starting to learn about our universe. I like the fact that the pictures included are real images of the actual planets and not fake cartoony images to give children a more realistic look. They are sure to remember what a planet looks like if they ever encountered a real life picture of it in any real life or academic setting. My son loves everything about planets and he has enjoyed reading this book very much.

Why I Chose "A Look at our Solar System"

I chose this book for my granddaughter Cris, who is in 2nd grade. We read together and I try to find books that she can read to me herself and at the same time learn something new. I haven't kept up to date with information about the solar system and thought this would be a good subject for us to share. It was simple enough for her to understand and retain the information given, without being bored with too much technical jargon. We enjoyed it very much

A Great Read for Men

I read another book on femdom that was full of slutty notions about foul language, pornography, and infidelity. This one is much better. It invites men especially to consider their interests and benefits in a female-led relationship.

After reading it, I've decided not to ask my wife about a formal FLR. We've already built one over time in certain ways. Most ordinarily, I offer to rub her feet without being told or wanting a favor back. When now and then she jibes me about my 30-lb. manly roll, I thank her for noticing. Occasionally I fix a dinner with makings of a food fight. It starts right there and she creams me every time. In the bedroom, when I kiss her butt lavishly in hope of the same favor, she sets me up for a good smart leather-whupping instead. Sometimes beyond that I get a righteous ball-breaker. What pain and glory and fun all at once!

We have a loving, solid marriage to which our playtime adds spice and thrills. I have planned my boldest step of all, but don't dare take it yet.

Legal scholars tend to assume that law matters; i.e., that people seek to comport their behavior with applicable rules of law. In what is probably the best sociological study of the role of law in dispute resolution, Robert Ellickson demonstrates that disputes are often resolved without recourse to law and, even more important, in ways different than they would have been resolved in court.
Ellickson begins with a richly detailed case study: Boundary and cattle trespass disputes in Shasta County, California. After reviewing the Shasta County experience, Ellickson relates his findings to a theoretical framework grounded in economics and psychology. The book thus combines the best of both theoretical and empirical approaches to the study of law.
Legal scholarship is increasingly concerned with the way social norms control behavior. This is the book that started that debate. It deserves to be read by anybody who is interested in law, economics, or dispute resolution.

Good Fences Make Good Neighbors

Order Without Law studies why, and under what circumstances, people accept a body of rules when there is no written law establishing those rules, and occasionally when the written law contradicts those rules. To answer this question, Professor Robert Ellickson settled into a long and detailed field study of the attitudes of cattle ranchers in Shasta County, California. His primary focus was on the informal rules governing boundary fences; who pays to build, who pays to maintain, who accepts the risk of stray cattle, and so forth. While his geographical focus was narrow, it was impressively deep, involving dozens of personal interviews and detailed reviews of public records. Ellickson explains why he believes that two current theories, law-and-economics and law-and-society, are both inadequate. He creates his own useful taxonomy of rules, rule makers, and rule enforcers. He offers hypotheses to predict future situations when people will more likely accept unwritten rules. Designed for professionals who deal daily in human behavior, such as sociologists, anthropologists, and lawyers, Order Without Law remains accessible to the general reader. One part was difficult to follow: the extended analysis of the Prisoner's Dilemma and its variations. But overall Order Without Law is a valuable addition to law and the social sciences.

An excellent inquiry into the role of ordinary neighborliness as superior to government and laws in resolving disputes, "Order Without Law" shows us, in an understandable American community, how unimportant government and formal laws are to most daily life and minor conflicts that arise. Written by a lawyer and professor, it sometimes has a strong legal brief flavor, but for those of us who favor liberty and oppose forcible imposition of will through "government," this book is support for the idea that government is actually superfluous to ordinary life.

Great Reference!!!

While studying for the PMP exam and as a practitioner, I found this tool to be straight-forward and useful for running projects. I would totally recommend it for exam prep and daily reference. I did however notice that one diagram was misaligned on page 222 and it covered part of the subsequent definition making it difficult to read. This slightly impacted my perceived quality of the product. All in all, it's worth the buy.

This volume continues the study of the eighteenth century begun in Haydn, Mozart, and the Viennese School 1740–1780 (1995) by focusing on the capital cities other than Vienna that were most important in the creation and diffusion of new music. It tells of events in Naples, where Vinci and Pergolesi went beyond their pre-1720 models to cultivate opera in a simpler, more direct manner, soon after christened the galant style. No less central was Venice, where Vivaldi perfected the concerto, on which were patterned the early symphonies and the newer kind of sonata. Dresden profited first from all these achievements and became, under Hasse's direction, the foremost center of Italian opera in Germany. Mannheim with its great orchestra did much to shape the modern symphony. A few years later, Paris became paramount, especially for its Opéra-Comique; during the 1770s the Opéra provided Gluck with a stage on which to cap his long international career. The book concludes with a description of Christian Bach in London, Paisiello in Saint Petersburg, and Boccherini in Madrid.

This long-awaited book offers a view of eighteenth-century music that is broad and innovative while remaining sensitive to the values of those times and places. One comes away from it with an understanding of the European context behind the triumphs of Haydn and Mozart.

OMG! A Blast from the Past

I mail ordered this book when I was a kid (in the 1960s.) I read it carefully and tried everything in it, but I don't think it worked. It is filled with detailed instructions on how to do everything an eight year old kid would want to do - project your awareness to distant places where young ladies might be undressing, and so on. Unfortunately, none of it worked. But I definitely learned something.

This book is a MUST have!

This book is AMAZING! If you want your children to walk with God and have a deeper relationship with Him, then use this curriculum. I'm a children's pastor and my kids begin hearing the voice of God during the very first lesson. This book puts lofty theological thoughts on their level so they can understand. I've seen all sorts of material out there for thousands of dollars that doesn't hold a candle to what's inside Becky Fischers books. You can't go wrong in purchasing this!
