Wasn't anything I expected. The pictures are dull and even features a straight up clip art of Disneys Hurcules! If you are impressed with the graphics from the 1987 game, Leisure Suit Larry you will love this book. For the price it was a huge disappointment and seems like a cash grab at the adult coloring book fad.

Delightful and yummy!

As a long time reader of Katrina's blogs, I have tried many of her recipes over the years. I can vouch for the ease of preparation, tastiness and economical factor on your budget. The recipes are simple enough for the beginner cook and tasty enough for the recipients to ask for seconds. The recipes admittedly do not fall under "healthy" eating, but readily bring back memories of my childhood table. I was confident enough that I would enjoy the recipes, that I did not even bother to "look inside" the book before purchasing. I found the first part of the book to be a delightful surprise and a sharp reminder that I used to cook with focus and love but now consider it an annoying, necessary task. Is it any wonder that my family now considers meal time an annoying interruption of more important things? Tonight's meal will be created with the focused intention of nurturing myself and my family. Thank you for the reminder of what it important, Katrina.

Goddess in the Kitchen

After reading the Energy Magic Series, I was curious as to how I could apply what I had learned about Energy Magic in the kitchen. I hate to cook. So, when I saw Miss Katrina had written a cookbook, I was happy to get a chance to review it for her. This fun book gently leads you into the kitchen and walks you through how to infuse good, positive energy into it, and make cooking a joy, or at least renew the joy that was once there. I found out a lot about the history of some of our food traditions, but more importantly, how to infuse Energy Magic into my kitchen. This book, incidentally, does nothing to offend anyone of any religion...because any good Bible student knows there's a lot of spiritual energy out there just waiting for us to tap into it. (It really worked! I tried a brand new recipe of my own creation, and it turned out really well! If you knew me, you would know how awesome that is, because I usually hate cooking!) The best part of all, is after learning how to bring the positive energy in to help me, I wandered through the recipe section of the book and was delighted to find good ol' Southern Home Cookin'!!! Comfort food, easy to fix, delicious and filling!! No complicated recipes to confuse and discourage, and a lot of humor and surprises along the way. This book gives food for both the tummy and the soul!

So much more than a Cookbook

I have a large virtual bookshelf of books I have not read yet, but this one captured me right away. Compared to other cookbooks, I found the book very lacking. However, this book was not intended to be "just a cookbook". In my opinion, I found the book more focusing on the history of our relationship with food, and how we can use our energies to make the food better. If you're looking for a book with a collections of "Healthy Living" recipes in it, this is not for you. This book has some "Comfort Foods" recipes in it, but that is not the focus of the book.

I hate to cook. It's one of those "Mom" jobs that is lost on me and makes me impatient. This book showed me how to make cooking more fun, to the point that I am cooking more foods than I ever have before. It shows in the food, too. I have made several meals now for family and friends, and all have said the same thing; Magnificent. I recommend the book to all of my friends that don't like to cook and will continue to practice what I have gained from Goddess In the Kitchen: The Magic and Making of Food for the rest of my life.

a must read for those interested in curating

very good and comprehensive study with good analysis of the role, it's history, Siemens and Hopps and a couple of contemporary of perspectives. I translated one section into Persian and had to come up with a word for curator (something like art-rotator). I found the section tracing curator through roman empire and onwards quite insightful.

I bought this collection for the essay by Geeta Kapur, in conjunction with my work as curator of the forthcoming exhibition 'New Art from South Asia' scheduled to open at the Herbert, Coventry, in January 2009, to coincide with the opening of the new galleries.

That new approach, which he names “preaching as proclamation,” has begun to arise from a variety of Euro-American and African American sources. Its primary aim is not to convey information, but to engender an encounter with God’s grace in Christ. More than guiding people to say “Yes, now I understand,” it hopes to lead them to proclaim “I am redeemed; we are saved.” More than telling the gospel story, it renders the gospel’s claim on human lives, leading to conviction of sin, repentance, and transformation.

Pulling together the disparate strands of this new homiletical school, Wilson constructs a comprehensive introduction to preaching, focusing on its character as proclamation of the sovereign grace of God.

Paul Scott Wilson is Professor of Homiletics at Emmanuel College of the University of Toronto. He is one of the most respected and recognized teachers of homiletics in North America. He is the author of a number of books, including The Practice of Preaching, Imagination of the Heart, God Sense: Reading the Bible for Preaching, and The Four Pages of the Sermon, all published by Abingdon Press. Just started this book but I have read many books on how to deliver sermons and this is the only one that has addressed the fact that there is difference in types of teaching/preaching and it's contents and delivery. This guy comes at this in a whole new way. I also got the book "Extremely Quickly" with this seller!

Great quick primer

Fred clearly knows what he is doing when he goes to a horse race. If you don't know anything about horse betting this is a great book to help you get started. Since getting started I've been betting on horses for about 5 weeks and couldn't be happier with my results. I totally recommend this book to anyone, whether you want to start betting seriously or even just want to know what the hell is going on at the tracks.

This book will really get you excited about horse racing. I'd been a few times before, and tried to learn a little prior to reading. Now I go and feel like I have some actual strategies that work. As with anything, you get what you put into it, but at least now I can get excited about racing and usually break even and have a cheap evening of entertainment at the track.

History of a Cultural Extinction

Slatta brings the Argentine gaucho alive in all his splendor and squalor. One gains an appreciation for the extraordinary lives of this equestrian people who almost literally lived in the saddle. The author depicts life on the pampa in sometimes searing realism: a hard, state-of-nature life, but one the gaucho himself would not have changed (and did not change at the few junctures where he had the chance).
Slatta presents a structuralist history of one of the W. Hemisphere's most colorful and renowned peoples. In other hands this approach might minimize the role of personality and personal choice, as though the gaucho bobbed helplessly on the rough seas of impersonal historical force acting thru the medium of latin culture.
Not so here. The author dispassionately shows that the gaucho's fierce independence and tribalism contributed directly to the demise of his culture in its collision with mainstream Argentine society on the pampa. It could not be otherwise. Modernity was simply incomprehensible to the gaucho. One could not be gaucho and latino at the same time, and civilization destroyed the gaucho way of life.
Slatta explores obvious parallels with other horse cultures such as that of the Mongols, the American Indian and the American cowboy. He demonstrates subject mastery in a wealth of detail concerning equipment, words, and convergent ways of handling similar challenges. The inherent drama of the gaucho story had echoes of "Monte Walsh" sounding in my mind as I finished the work.
This thoroughly readable book is enjoyable both as history and as entertainment.

A fine intro. to Argentine history for US readers.

Slatta's book works well when assigned to college undergraduates, because he covers complex and important issues in an engaging style. The subject of gauchos should be fascinating as well to lay readers interested in US cowboys & frontier history, because Slatta provides a clear basis for comparative history. 10-15 years ago it would have deserved a 5-star rating, but "Gauchos" has stimulated further research which is beginning to modify, or at least extend, its conclusions (cf. J. Lynch, "Massacre in the Pampas 1872"). Nevertheless, Slatta's book remains the place to begin expanding one's understanding of New World frontier history.

The story of The Trial's publication is almost as fascinating as the novel itself. Kafka intended his parable of alienation in a mysterious bureaucracy to be burned, along with the rest of his diaries and manuscripts, after his death in 1924. Yet his friend Max Brod pressed forward to prepare The Trial and the rest of his papers for publication. When the Nazis came to power, publication of Jewish writers such as Kafka was forbidden; Kafka's writings, many of which have distinctively Jewish themes, did not find a broad audience until after World War II. (Hannah Arendt once observed that although "during his lifetime he could not make a decent living, [Kafka] will now keep generations of intellectuals both gainfully employed and well-fed.") Among the current crop of Kafka heirs is Breon Mitchell, the translator of this edition of The Trial. Rather than tidying up Kafka's unconventional grammar and punctuation (as previous translators have done), Mitchell captures the loose, uneasy, even uncomfortable constructions of Kafka's original story. His translation technique is the only way to convey the comedy and confusion of this narrative, in which Josef K., "without having done anything truly wrong," is arrested, tried, convicted and executed--on a charge that is never disclosed to him. --Michael Joseph Gross

Kafka's final work was left unfinished at the time of his 1924 death, and the original 1925 and subsequent editions were edited according to the standards of the day. This edition endeavors to restore the text as closely as possible to the original manuscript. According to the publisher, "This translation makes slight changes in the chapter divisions and sequence of chapter fragments." In addition to the text, this volume includes a bibliography and a chronology of the author's life.

The meaning of Kafkaesque..

Kafkaesque: Impenetrably oppresive or nightmarish, as in the fiction of Franz Kafka.
Indeed, "The Trial" is the epitome of this adjective used to describe the haunting novels of Franz Kafka.
Breon Mitchell's translation is fantastic as it expands and clarifies the first version by the Muirs. A lengthy translators preface is included, written by Mitchell, explaining the reasoning for this new translation based on the German definitive edition. Various examples of the text (in German) are also used in the explanations of the hows and whys.
On to the story itself. Josef K. awakens one more to find that he's been arrested. He doesn't know why and is never told. His daily life is allowed to go on over the course of the year the novel takes place, while trying to understand what is happening. Throughout this process Josef begins to sink further into paranoia and guilt, with the fate of his life in the balance....
This is a deep and dense novel, with various interpretations. It's scary to realize that this could actually happen (perhaps not on this scale) and that's one of things Kafka excels at. Taking the everyday mundane and catapulting it into the realm of the absurd and nightmarish..
The leftover fragments of "The Trial" are also included after the story, adding further insight into this tragic story. It's also worth it to pick up the Muir's translation, to see the differences, and to have the original english version to keep.
A must read.

A Crazy Train

No novel will ever approach THE TRIAL in giving one a special, and by all means necessary, appreciation for the criminal justice system and rights in the free world.

Imagine being charged with a crime tomorrow, but no one will tell you what that crime is, when you committed it, who accused you, who or what was harmed, or when your trial will take place. Then, when you talk to court workers and even your own lawyer, it's a foregone conclusion that you will be found guilty and your best hope is to drag out the process as long as you can just to STAY ALIVE as this crazy train hurtles toward your inevitable end.

A historic, nightmarish novel that plants in its reader bad-dream seeds that may not germinate for years, but they will. Oh yes, they will.

I don't deny that Kafka has a very out-of-the-box way of writing, but to be honest it didn't do it for me. While I wouldn't recommend it to someone looking for a light/fun read, if you're looking for something that will test your grip on reality, I'd take a gander. Definitely gets you talking.
