About the Author
Eric Schiller (born March 20, 1955 in New York City) is an American chess player, trainer, arbiter and one of the most prolific authors of books on chess in the 20th century. In 1974, Schiller was the Illinois Junior Champion. Schiller played for the University of Chicago team several times at the Pan American Intercollegiate Team Chess Championship. He was an organizer of the Hawaii International chess festivals 1994-98 including 1998 US Open California Champion 1995. Later that year, he appeared as a chess adviser for the music group Phish on some of the stops for their "Chess Tour" where they played an ongoing game of two chess moves per tour stop and some "band vs. audience" partial games as part of their stage performance. Schiller was an arbiter at several notable games and championships including the FIDE World Chess Championship 2000. While Vladimir Kramnik and Garry Kasparov opted not to participate in the event, they had both endorsed Schiller for this sensitive role during the planning stages. As of April 2009, Schiller has a FIDE rating of 2166. He is also an International Arbiter and International Trainer. Schiller's expertise and publications in the Flohr-Zaitsev Variation made him a sought-after expert when Gary Kasparov used that opening at the second game at the World Chess Championship 1990.

For the Robatsch, 1...g6 Aficionado

An interesting book from IM Schiller. I consider it a variation of the Robatsch. It has most in common with the Sniper and Accelerated Dragon Sicilian but can morph into Benoni-like positions as well. Schiller has a strong proclivity for naming and he does it in spades with Fly the Pterodactyl. Not wholly necessary but sort of fun. The page layout is a bit chaotic and inconsistent. Lots of games, discussion of ideas/themes so if you have an interest in the Robatsch, Acc.Dragon and/or Sniper I would recommend this book. Another fun and useful volume on the Hippos, offbeat Robatsch lines is Wall, et al - Winning with the Krazy Kat and Old Hippo.

Sven Lindqvist, a traveler and historian, paints a broad-brush history of European colonialism, especially in Africa. Drawing his title from Joseph Conrad's fable Heart of Darkness, he turns up 19th-century newspaper accounts of British massacres of wounded Sudanese rebels after the siege of Omdurman, of German concentration camps in what was once called Southwest Africa, of a Belgian captain who decorated his flower beds with the heads of recalcitrant plantation workers. These incidents were not unusual, Lindqvist writes. Neither were they thought especially brutal by their perpetrators, for, he argues, colonialism was guided by a doctrine that placed Europe at the top of the evolutionary ladder and regarded non-Europeans as a separate species bound for extinction--a doctrine that found its ultimate expression in the Holocaust. This is an occasionally gruesome and always provocative study.

Disturbing and daring

Four stars because too short. Although going through some of the references at the end of the book would extend the amount of reading considerably. Disturbing because the description of atrocities is heartrending for someone who values life and does not cheer at bombs being dropped through the push of a button on children two continents away by functionaries in plush armchairs. Exterminating all the brutes is online, alive and well, thank you. Disturbing because what is described in the book is only the tip of the iceberg in terms of massacres and atrocities. History recorded comparatively few descriptions of atrocities by a few well-meaning souls. The rest lacked the required courage the author mentions, in particular, at the end of the book. The courage to behold the beam that is in thine own eye. Daring to mention "Genocide" in connection with pre-WWII massacres, although the author writes the appropriate lines to exonerate himself - did he lack courage in the face of overwhelming odds ? Genocide is ingrained in human nature, but the roots of "scientific" and "good" genocide as conducted by European nations in particular, and discussed in the book, run much deeper. The book could have gained by delving into them. The book is concise, to the point, without prose-padding. This is particularly refreshing. It is a very good read... if you have the courage.

Incredibly powerful and relevant still

Exterminate All the Brutes is brief and disturbing; Sven Lindqvist unveils the realities and moral convictions we have almost completely repressed. Just as the author suggests, the book shatters the image we have of ourselves, but even more importantly, it is distressing how relevant his ideas and Conrad's `Heart of Darkness' are in the world today - again.

The title of the book is taken from Joseph Conrad's 1902 classic novel - Heart of Darkness. In it, the main character, Kurtz, goes to Africa to bring progress and culture to the uncivilized continent. He is dispatched to Africa as an ivory procurement agent, and as the story develops the reader is confronted with the unreal brutality of the colonial rule. Conrad's work intertwines the themes of `light of civilization' and `darkness of barbarism' and makes reader realize the hollowness of these phrases as Kurtz surrounds himself with chaos and mayhem. Sven Lindqvist develops this theme as he traces the imperial history of European colonialism and condenses it to a single sentence: "Exterminate all the brutes." European world expansion, he claims, and the employed tactics of extermination are the truths we like to forget. Preferring to externalize we look at the Holocaust as a historical aberration, a smear on the path of progress and enlightenment brought to the world by the Western societies. However, as the author points out, just as all of Europe contributed to the making of Kurtz, it would also be the European habits and political precedents that would lay the foundation for the atrocities of the Second World War. What was done in Africa, would be repeated in Europe - we know this, what we lack is the courage to face what we know and draw some conclusions.

The book culminates by pointing to the Holocaust, but one doesn't have to look far to see the same principles being applied in the world today; `Heart of Darkness' is applicable to every nation, culture and ideology. `Exterminate All the Brutes' is an incredibly powerful book.

BOOK WORTH GETTING DOWN WITH!!!

I purchased this book about a week ago, it came pretty quick in the mail. Anyway, when I cracked it open I was really impressed with the tunes in this book!! It brings back alot of memories back when I was a kid going to school dances and this was the type of music they played!!! As being totally a Drummer, I was impressed with tab of many of my favorite songs from the Disco era!!! So I dusted off the electric guitar and started playing many of the tunes in this book!!! Superstition & Disco Inferno being two of my favorites!!! If you like the music from this era, you won't be dissappointed with this book!!! So dust off the old vinyl and the dancing shoes. Get yourself this book and an Electric Guitar. Then prepare to BOOGIE DOWN!!!!!

If this book teaches even one solid tell, it has paid for itself five times over... Experienced poker players know that winning is about squeezing out every single advantage, especially if that advantage is not known by the other players at the table. That is why it stands to reason to absorb as much knowledge on poker tells as possible... This is not the end-all-be-all of poker tell books, but it is an essential weapon in the arsenal of any up and coming poker player. I will be eagerly looking for more to come from Cris in the future.

Besides odds, being able to read opponents is the most important aspect of playing poker. With a good enough read, one could theoretically win at the poker table without ever looking at their hand. That's why I wrote The Only 25 Poker Tells you Need to Know.

It is distracting to try and memorize 100 or more poker tells. Instead, one will find much more profit by looking at the most common and exploitable poker tells. Just as vital as the tells themselves, one must also try to uncover the motivations behind each opponent's reaction. What is the right move if your opponent is acting confident? What about comfortable? Every emotion will uncover more and more about what the state of the game really is.

When I say exploitable poker tells, I don't only mean the tells a player is most likely to run into. Sometimes the most important tell may only appear once in a game. It is in the highest stress moments that the real money is made. Even a small glimpse into the mind of an opponent at one of these all-in situations can mean the difference between the final table and 64th place.

Not horrible, not great.

While I was surprised and disappointed by the brief nature of the book, perhaps I was unfairly (or not) comparing it to books I have previously read, such as Caro's book of Poker Tells, and Navarro's contributions in "Read 'Em and Reap", which are 2 excellent and comprehensive works on the subject. Statz tries to reduce the science down to 25 basic tells, and while I understand his point of view, I don't necessarily agree. Is the entire study of body language and tells really that simple? I think not. However, I do appreciate the idea of trying to simplify and deciphering and categorizing all tells as either strength or weakness.
I did not give a poor rating, or a high rating for this book, but I think I was more than fair The bottom line is that even if there is only one small, solitary idea offered in the book that makes you money even one time at the poker table, then it is still worthwhile.
One small point I would like to make is that it would seem to me the author should at least have been able to afford a competent proof-reader...I found the numerous grammatical errors rather annoying, but I guess that's my own personal problem.
The "best" quality is that one can easily read this entire book in less than an hour, but that may or may not be such a good thing...
Overall assessment - not the best work on the subject by far, but still somewhat useful.

Statz knows his stuff!

I was a little skeptical but this book was well worth it! The author does a great job of explaining how to read "tells" and gives plenty of world life examples. I would strongly encourage anyone interested in taking their game to the next level to give "The Only 25 Poker Tells You Need To Know" a try. Like I said, Statz knows his stuff!

As an above average poke player I still found this book useful. I'm always reading to try and improve my game. I would recommend this book. Though I feel I already know most of these tips, I didn't know I know them. It's good to brush up and get some reassurance.
