Grade 5 Up-In the style of The Great Fire (Scholastic, 1995), Murphy writes a fascinating account of the March, 1888, storm that paralyzed the Northeastern U.S. for four days. This terrifying natural disaster is described from the perspectives of several individuals of various ages and social positions, primarily in New York City, some of whom survived the storm and some of whom did not. The narrative is a readable and seamless blend of history and adventure adapted from extensive first-person accounts and primary news sources. Beginning with an ominous harbinger, the scene is set with descriptions of what life was like at that time, including popular culture and means of forecasting the weather, which completely failed in this instance. The text is exciting without being melodramatic: as the storm arrives, strengthens, and stays, readers come to see the horrible extent to which people had to cope with the loss of food, heat, communications, and loved ones. Concluding by explaining why this event is important, the author places it in the context of other weather and its effect on history. Authentic photographs, drawings, and maps that demonstrate the course of the storm, all done in the same sepia tone as the text, perfectly illustrate the book. Overall, a superb piece of writing and history.

Gr. 5-9. On March 10, 1888, the weather on the eastern coast of the U.S. was so pleasant that families were picnicking. By Monday morning, however, a huge, destructive blizzard--actually two storms--stretched from Delaware north to Maine and as far west as the Mississippi River. New York City had 21 inches of drifting snow; Troy, New York, was blanketed under 55 inches. Supplies of fuel, food, and milk dwindled; power lines snapped; trains were trapped; nearly 200 ships were lost at sea; and an estimated 800 people died in New York City alone. No wonder some called the storm "The Great White Hurricane." Like Murphy's award-winning The Great Fire (1995), this is an example of stellar nonfiction. The haunting jacket illustration grabs attention, and the dramatic power of the splendid narrative, coupled with carefully selected anecdotes, newspaper accounts, and vintage and contemporary photos, will keep the pages turning. Murphy does a fine job describing the incredible storm, the reasons behind the tragic consequences, and the terrifying fates of victims. A splendid choice for booktalking; order several copies. I think that it’s great!

On Sunday, March 11, 1888, a storm slammed into the East Coast of the United States. Very quickly, residents from the Chesapeake Bay to Maine realized that this was no normal late-winter snow. Instead, 20-60 inches of snow descended, bringing life-threatening conditions to millions. Especially hard hit were the residents of New York City, people who lived in poverty, and depended on going to work every day and buying their daily bread each and every day. This is the story of that horrific storm, and what it did.

Overall, I must say that this is a very good book. The author did a great job of bringing the story of the storm to life, and really showing the human cost of what happened. It’s a great look into the times and the people, the events and the results – and all in a mere 144 pages! I think that it’s great!

Blizzard! A Great Read!

Jim Murphy has written a fascinating and captivating account of the storm that hit the northern east coast of the United States in March, 1888. At the end of one of the mildest winters in the East, two storms coming from different directions combined to create an unexpected storm, with high winds and freezing snow that devastated the northeast. The story focuses mostly on the effects of the storm in New York City, where all public transportation came to a standstill, and the storm virtually shut down the city. The snow was so deep and the winds so strong that the trains were actually buried in the snow, trapping the passengers inside. Most businesses were closed down because people could not get to their jobs. Those who did venture outside risked their lives in the freezing temperatures. The storm lasted for two days, and an estimated 800 people died in New York City alone.

This is a well-written, and interesting book. Authentic photographs are included, which enchance the narrative. Jim Murphy is an outstanding writer of Young Adult nonfiction. The events of the "great blizzard" come to life in this book.

Do you think non-fiction books can't be good? Well your wrong. Blizzard is a really good non-fiction book. It is about the blizzard of 1888. The storm caught most people by surprise because it was unusually warm on March 10, 1888. There was a storm system coming from the North and one coming from the South. The one in the North went along the Canadian border then started to swooped down. The one coming from the South went along the Gulf of Mexico,and then went South some then started to go North. People were in panic. They lost alot of people March 11, 1888. For example, people looking for the subway would get lost and not be able to be found. If they were found they had already died of freezing, being burried, or starving. Two little boys heading out to find their grandmas house got lost then were found not long after burried but still alive. And another example is two tugboats crashed into each other. Most of the people in that accident lived but some died. This is a good book for all age levels.

This is a first edition and it shows. I took a gamble and ordered this one because it was the latest release so I assumed it was the most complete option. The content is solid and thorough, but it is littered with typographical errors and contains contradictory statements at times. I am about 40% into the book and plan to continue but the latest annoyance that prompted me to review was a section that described a topic with a color-based analogy, and was accompanied by a black and white diagram. It is not so much an issue for me, but for someone else approaching this text and certification with little practical experience to help them spot the errors they would have a much more difficult time than necessary preparing for the exam.

Good Read! Worth The Expense!

This was a good study guide. As usual when working on certifications you should never rely on just one study guide. I used this study guide and a couple others and passed the exam on the first attempt. If you have not worked in a cloud and/or virtualization environment this is a challenging certification, but certainly doable. I knew some cloud basics going into this, but have never worked in a cloud environment. This book is worth the read. The one piece of advice I leave, is remember that CompTIA exams are vendor neutral. I recommend not spending much time on learning specific vendor platforms that are covered in the book. You will not be tested at all on what you know with VMware, Salesforce, Microsoft Hyper-V and etc...

Use only as a review source before your exam

The book is okay but it gets alittle too verbose at times. Like it'll start explaining a new concept but by the end of the paragraph, it's explained about 4 new concepts in addition to the first one. Some of the stuff in the book was new to me so it just wasn't a good way to try to learn. Also some of the test answers aren't accurate. I could read one thing in the summary. Take the chapter test, get a question wrong then look back at the summary and know that it was the right answer but the answer key said it was some other answer that was clearly wrong.

I would advise anyone to studying to use another book FIRST, then when you understand cloud more, come back to this book. It was alittle easier the second time thru after I had alittle more knowledge under my belt. AND ignore the tests all together. I've found incorrect answers on more than one occasion. Also the book explains things that aren't even on the test. I don't know why it's in the book. Like I said, it's too verbose at times and it over complicates things and brings in info that you don't need to know.

Twenty-four years after reading this book, its spirit still remains in me. I first read Tales of a Chinese Grandmother while in the third grade. Although I was raised in a traditional Chinese household, this book explained, with charm, the traditions and origins Chinese folklore.

This is not a college compendeum of every tradition, rather it is an endearing look at Chinese culture as explained by a grandmother to two young children as they grow up in old China.
