US Guys: The True and Twisted Mind of the American Man, by Charlie LeDuff

From the New York Times bestselling author of Detroit: An American Autopsy

“A fearless, clear eyed companion into parts of America that rarely see print.”—Entertainment Weekly

Charlie LeDuff has made a career out of his extraordinary ability to capture the spirit of the people and places he profiles. US Guys is his odyssey in search of the truth behind the American man, from a jaded homicide detective in Detroit to a two-bit jockey at a racetrack in Miami to a pair of lovers at a gay rodeo. With audacity, humor, and no small amount of physical pain, he captures a broad diversity of voices as they wrestle with an America they love but increasingly fail to understand.

From Publishers Weekly
Whether fighting the biggest guy at an Oakland biker club, talking race with a semipro Texas football team or riding shotgun with Detroit homicide, LeDuff's gonzo exploits in this book are nothing short of inspired. The New York Times reporter is a big-game hunter, with plenty of ability to sniff out, ensnare and lovingly stuff and mount his subjects. Less an analytic discourse than an "American travelogue," the book searches out "the angry forgotten middling America"—rendering a complex array of American wildlife, from gay rodeo star wannabes to Little Big Horn re-enactors. Though LeDuff's writing often comes off as aggressive and unfiltered, there are many moments when it feels self-consciously stylized, eclipsing an otherwise keen eye for detail. Authenticity surfaces in astute observations ("self-expression is dangerous when too much expression is mixed with too little sense of self"). But LeDuff's quest for edginess sometimes overwhelms his insights, through overuse of words like "cheap" ("cheap booze," "cheap-looking girl," "cheap chromium tanning salons"). His pronouncements on American life (e.g., "meaning is invented in America through new sink faucets and car waxes and aluminum siding in pastel colors") can also miss the mark. Like the hard-luck stories he chronicles, the book is angry, touching, entertaining and flawed—a prologue, one hopes, to greater things down the road. (Feb. 5)

Review
"Mr. LeDuff has a distinct style for committing what the sociologist C. Wright Mills said was James Agee's forte: sociological poetry. . . . [He] has some Damon Runyon in him, some Raymond Chandler, and more good one-liners than a week's worth of machine-tooled sitcoms."
-The New York Times

"A fearless, clear-eyed companion into parts of America that rarely see print."

Grim Tone of Male Misfits
By M. JEFFREY MCMAHON
Each chapter of this book presents a well-detailed, separate profile of a down-and-out male misfit who, struggling, with his sense of belonging or lack thereof, resorts to booze, other addictions, long-winded story-telling, eccentric indulgences, or some extreme macho pursuit or other. LeDuff is a capable writer and an excellent stylist, but his thesis, that the diverse range of contradictory male impulses defy conventional masculine images, is a bit broad and heavy-handed. With a tone that is grim, earnest and too often rich in sanctimony, LeDuff seems to be lecturing us, PBS style, on the "struggles and issues" of working class men. LeDuff is intent on championing his populist cause, so much so that early in the book he criticizes (without naming him) Thomas Friedman for dismissing the working class by arguing that Americans have lost their competitive edge. He'll be damned if he'll let Friedman take such a cheap pot shot and he's going to give sympathetic portraits of gritty working class men and defend them from Friedman's screed. The result is an overly serious, humorless, and in the end somewhat politically boxed-in book. To be fair, I was expecting some more humor, more irony, more playfulness. But I suppose the author felt it necessary to keep everything somber and deadly serious. Too bad because LeDuff is strong talent, he has experienced much around the world, traveling to Iraq for example, and he surely has a lot to say.

Versatile
By Steve Chernoski
Whether blue collar, white collar; whether a pragmatist or philosopher, this book will give you something to talk about. No matter what type of crowd I'm around, a beer hockey league or a wine and cheese party, I can bring up this book as a conversation piece. That rarely, if ever, happens with a book. Worth the read.

SOME of "US Guys"
By Danton M.
I'm sure if LeDuff felt that some white collar writer were lumping all the men of his generation into some group, he'd rant and rave against such stereotyping. But he's eager to do the same, throwing out sweeping generalizations about the men of his generation (once called "X" now called nothing in particular, he asserts). To draw on his experiences at Nevada's Burning Man festival and say his generation "meanders through life without purpose, charting with a broken compass" sounds nice and deep, but in all honesty, are the people who trek into the Nevada desert (or join the gay rodeo circuit, fight-club motorcycle clubs, or bottom-rung football teams) truly the standard-bearers of an entire generation?
Sure, LeDuff, go ahead and write about the down-and-outers, but don't lump everyone else born in the same couple of decades into your groups of directionless losers. Your stories are an interesting look at a small group of disaffected American men, not all of us, so jump down off your high horse of judgement and recognize the limits of your choice of experiences.

Voices of Death: Letters and Dairies of People Facing Death
By Dorothy Ratnarajah
This book is beautifully written by Edwin Shneidman, the father of suicidology in the USA. Its value is that the author includes transcripts of actual support sessions with his clients and himself as grief therapist. These transcripts demonstrate how to 'be with' someone who is grieving a traumatic loss, or who is grieving and frightened as they face death from terminal illness. Professor Shneidman does not try to 'fix' his clients, or to influence their process, he 'walks with them', in perfect empathic step.

Clssification - Literary Human Patrimony!
By Proença, Mário R.P.
Voices of death, is probably the best book I've ever read. Dr. Schneidman presents in this book the timeless subject of death offering us a rutter that enables the reader to understand and demystify the death phenomenon.
A book that teaches the reader the basic processes of dying with dignity for those who have a terminal illness or have a friend or relative or a known person who is facing diseases like cancer or leukemia.
How to face death with dignity, and what everyone should know in order to give the comfort to a dying person.
Dr. Schneidman, in his unique beautifully writing style, presents the concepts of grief, self-mourning, pre-mourning, and mourning. Deaths by suicide, execution and malignancy, offering us "maps" that helps us to avoid the reefs of life and to make this trip a safe one.
The documents, diaries, letters and suicide notes illustrate the thoughts and give us the real picture of the reality of the human mind when facing death, helping us to understand death as a natural and dignifying part of everyone's passage in this world.
If this book could be classified, I would classify it as a Literary Human Patrimony

Between 2005 and 2009, the bodies of eight women were discovered around the murky canals and crawfish ponds of Jennings, Louisiana, a bayou town of 10,000 in the heart of the Jefferson Davis parish. Local law enforcement officials were quick to pursue a serial killer theory, opening a floodgate of media coverage—from CNN to The New York Times. Collectively the victims became known as the “Jeff Davis 8,” and their lives, their deaths, and the ongoing investigation reveals a small southern community’s most closely guarded secrets.

As Ethan Brown suggests, these homicides were not the work of a single serial killer, but the violent fallout of Jennings’ brutal sex and drug trade, a backwoods underworld hidden in plain sight. Mixing muckraking research and immersive journalism over the course of a five-year investigation, Ethan Brown reviewed thousands of pages of previously unseen homicide files to determine what happened during each victim’s final hours. Epic in scope and intensely suspenseful, Murder in the Bayou is the story of an American town buckling under the dark forces of poverty, race, and class division—and a lightning rod for justice for the daughters it lost.

Review
"Ethan Brown's daring and dangerous exposé uncovers a murky inferno of violence and corruption in south Louisiana, where it's hard to tell the good guys from the bad, and the brutal murders of eight prostitutes go unpunished, though not necessarily unsolved."—John Berendt, author of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil

“A deeply reported, and disturbing, true crime story that is as puzzling as it is intriguing. Ethan Brown’s Murder in the Bayou raises as many questions as it answers, but never ceases to enrage. This is a book about power: those who wield it, and those who, tragically, fall victim to it.”—Janet Reitman, contributing editor at Rolling Stone and author of the New York Times Notable Book Inside Scientology

"By way of Jefferson Davis Parish, Louisiana, Ethan Brown casts light on an America that many people would prefer to believe is not there.  Murder in the Bayou reveals a complicated web of violence, poverty, drugs, and corruption--it's a brave feat of reporting."--Zachary Lazar,  author of Evening's Empire: The Story of My Father's Murder

"Ethan Brown wades into the fetid political swamps of south Louisiana and emerges with a sordid yarn of sex, drugs and death. With a depraved and threatening cast of characters, Brown delivers a dogged, courageous inquiry into the murders of eight women. Even those accustomed to institutional corruption in the Pelican State will be shocked by this tale."—Doug J. Swanson, author of Blood Aces: The Wild Ride of Benny Binion, the Texas Gangster Who Created Vegas Poker

"Brown's writing is clear and approachable, and his research is meticulous...readers will be shaken by the unpleasant implications of a narrative bearing similarities to the first season of True Detective. Compulsively readable true crime provoking questions about policing, poverty, and the ritualized brutality of the rural South."--Kirkus Reviews

“Investigating what appeared to be a string of unsolved sex-murders that began in 2005, journalist Ethan Brown eventually uncovered a snakepit of small-town corruption in the bayou parish of Jefferson Davis, Louisiana. With its large cast of lost, doomed, and sinister characters, its dense atmosphere of menace and dread, and, at its center, a dogged reporter pursuing a mystery with the fearlessness of a pulp-fiction private eye, Brown’s Murder in the Bayou is a stunning work of real-life Southern noir.”--Harold Schechter, author of The Serial Killer Files

"Far truer than True Detective . . . part murder case, part corruption expose, and part Louisiana noir."--Boris Kachka, NYMag.com

"The depths of the corruption detailed in the book by Brown...will make your head spin for days after you finish reading it."--Uproxx

"[A] page-turning account...filled with vivid characters...startling and haunting."--Gambit Weekly

"Doggedly researched and sensitively observed."--Gothamist

"A gripping narrative that will revive curiosity about eight unsolved murders...Brown’s spare but effective prose and measured analysis of the evidence makes this a must-read for true-crime fans."--Publishers Weekly STARRED review

"Damn near hard to put down."--Sarah Weinman, editor of Women Crime Writers and author of Among the Wholesome Children

"A complicated web of intrigue and murder and one that will haunt you long after you put the book down.”--The Monroe News Star

"Explosive."--The Huffington Post

"Mesmerizing......a snarled web of power dynamics and deep-rooted corruption...symptomatic of a kind of system-wide brokenness that applies all over the country. ...Brown is able to show each individual victim as a real person, who is mourned and who couldn't be silenced as easily as their murderers seemed to think. "--Rolling Stone.com

"Sweeping, rigorously reported...the story has all the elements of a sordid Southern Gothic."--The New Orleans Advocate

"A real-life Southern Gothic story, Murder in the Bayou uncovers what became one of the most suspenseful and mysterious investigations of the decade."--Deep South Magazine

giving the facts that the author has discovered in an entertaining and easy to read manner
By Tvengineer
Violence, corruption, incompetence, intimidation, cronyism, lies, cover ups and back door politics are just some of what this book uncovers in a little southwest Louisiana town. While it shines a magnifying lens on Jennings, La. be sure that this type of thing goes on in towns small and large all over the country. The book is well researched and well presented, giving the facts that the author has discovered in an entertaining and easy to read manner.

One of the best true crime books I have read, unfolding right now - Highly Recommended
By Bradley Bevers
This is a concise book, just over 200 pages, and one of the best true crime/investigative books I have come across. Brown spent years and combed through thousands of pages of documents and interviews to research this, and its very well done - one of the things I hate the most about true crime books is how they tend to sprawl through 500-600 pages when they could have gotten there much faster. There is nothing wasted in this book.

Beyond the meticulous research and well written text, here are some other things that stand out:

* Brown actually creates and stands behind his theories. Does not put a lot of options in front of the reader for them to decide - he makes a stand on what he thinks is the truth, and its convincing.
* Interviews the likely murderers multiple times.
* Calls out a current House Representative and Senate Candidate for connections to the prostitution and drug ring in Jennings.

One of the rare books that is unfolding as you read it. The murders are still being investigated, the corrupt officials in Jennings are still in place, and Boustany is running for senate. Excellent read, highly recommended - because of its immediacy, I would recommend reading as soon as possible.

I could give this book a 10 out of 10! Loved it.. makes you think twice about trusting people in Jennings.. I'm too scared to walk down the road anymore, but shines light on these poor innocent women who deserve justice! Great work Ethan!
