The stage is set for a heart-stopping conclusion!
By Mandi J
Burnt Devotion was intended as a bonus novella dedicated to the story of Wyn and Thom. While a majority of the book does back track, the plot does move forward with some interesting and heart stopping twists. I have seen some complain that this book wasn’t strictly necessary, and while that may be true for the first 50% of the book, I still loved getting to see these events through the eyes of the secondary characters that I love so much.
Burnt Devotion begins at the point in time of Joclyn healing Wyn’s curse. When reading Soul of Flame, I had fervently wished to know more about Wyn and Thom. There seemed to be so much left unsaid, and I found myself wanting to know more. Ms. Ethington answers all of those burning questions with Burnt Devotion, and I was thrilled to delve deeper into Wyn. Even though the events have already occurred, they feel entirely new and different when told from a different perspective. I still remember while reading SOF, wondering about the trek Wyn, Thom, Dramin, Sain and Ryland made to the cave. I wanted to see how they made it there with basically three invalids, and Ms. Ethington did not disappoint. I loved seeing Wyn’s power as well as her inner conflict.
However, I must admit that with the time between these books, and the switch between POV and timelines, I did start to get a little confused. After the first few chapters, I ended up putting Burnt Devotion aside and re-read Soul of Flame. It helped tremendously to have the timeline fresh in my mind, and I had the bonus of reading Soul of Flame again! I will never tire of reading about Joclyn and Ilyan.
In Burnt Devotion, we also get the POV of Ryland and Ovalia as well. The first couple of chapters from Ryland were difficult. It was hard seeing a character that I loved so much from the beginning in that kind of constant torture. It was also a little difficult to read. It seemed a little repetitive and I just wanted it to be over. However, I should never doubt Rebecca because the reason for glimpsing his inner struggle became apparent in the later chapters. That was blessed relief and I literally felt my heart lighten at the progress that is made. I am still hopeful that Ryland gets his own happy ending.
I have to say that I also enjoy seeing how the others view Ilyan and Joclyn, the changes that they all see in Joclyn, the reverence they have for their relationship, and the importance of what that means for all of their futures. This book has Joclyn come into her own. It has been a complete journey for Joclyn from shy teenager, to broken girl, and now a strong, confidant woman that was born to lead her people. I love seeing her become who she was meant to be with Ilyan by her side.
I want to keep this as spoiler free as possible. The Imdalind series is just a journey you need to take on your own. I don’t want to spoil that for anyone. The chapters from Prague were definitely my favorite. I love these characters so much. There are quite a few things revealed once they get to Prague that have me quite nervous. There is of course a HUGE twist. It never fails that Rebecca leaves me biting my nails and staying up nights wondering how this is all going to work out.
The stage has certainly been set for a heart-stopping conclusion in Dawn of Ash, and it can’t possibly get here soon enough!

Very disappointing
By Amazon Customer
I have read this series from the beginning and have read those books multiple times because I love the plot. I feel that this book could have been left out of the series and possibly been a novella. The first 50% of the book is a recap of Soul of Flame from mostly Wyn's pov. I'm not a fan of recaps only if the information im getting from the recap was different or explained something that needed to be explained from the other book. In my opinion I didn't really learn anything earth shattering new from those different point of views. We had concluded from Soul of Flame that Wyn was having a hard time trying to come to grips with her memories being restored. We also knew that Ryland was going crazy and that his father had him under his control. I felt a recap wasn't necessary for us to learn some of the information. You could skip the first 50% of the book and not miss anything. I'm not really looking forward to the last book if it's written anything like this book, with the recap and unnecessary information.

Critical review, No major spoilers but thoughts about the POV's and overall feel of the book
By Amazon Customer
I liked this book!
I almost wish we had this as part of the last book. While it does backtrack some, I think many readers will enjoy some critical new information from other characters POV. I did flip through a few pages-parts that were Tuesday spoiler clips ect. I enjoyed the way she wrote this book. It did feel more direct, focused, and had heart. There are a few twists in there, and that ending!...omg woot! Ok, now no major spoilers here, just how the book was laid out and my thoughts overall.
The Wyn part of the story is part of the backtracking. I personally felt it was really cool to feel her trying to find herself. It is stated many times, but I feel it pertained to the situation. Some may or may not like that. I personally, have found Wyn harder to follow. I liked reading her more in Jos's POV and in the first book and parts of two. I'm sure I'll be in the minority here.
Ryland I also skipped parts because I read them in spoilers. I feel in the future I will skip such large chunks in teaser Tuesdays on her Facebook :P While he gained something, he felt...slightly still weak after he attained it? or crazy? However, the points he does make were very valid and important. I had this dueling feeling while reading it, and I think some of that was from reading it as a spoiler, and then revisiting it through Wyn, and Joss. Make sense? We needed to see this side of him and feel his thoughts. Personally, while I love him, I felt he had this thing with second in command (not spoiling) that seemed super quick. I did like how he viewed Joss after the fact, toward the end of the book, and I felt this is 'right' where he should be. It felt like part of old Ryland. It was sad to hear why and what he did along the way, but we capture why he had done it. It was so much he had to deal with, that everything else before that moment seemed trivial. We now understand this small little world he had with his best friend, and maybe even why they fell in love, but it had a mature feel about it. I am sure some Ryland/Joss fans will see what I mean. I like how she brings us back to the beginning in a sense. I also liked seeing some of his darker feelings. With all that said, Ryland had this little piece of heaven, and you can certainly see the events unfold fully on his end. In no way did this take away from it. It was sort of hard with all the thoughts in his head, but slow down and take it in.
Sain- he is intriguing here. I can see the wrench Rebecca must had dealt with. I think the next book will really be fun.
Bonus chapters-one was sad, and one was beautiful.
I don't think this was a filler book. I definitely felt that half of the book was novella, and then continued on. Is that a bad thing? Nah. Don't read spoilers!! how can we not!?! Still, I did feel that, but I already expected that going into the book. I felt her writing was strong, direct, full of heart in a way the last book was not. And that was a really good book. I think the time factor was the only thing I had issues with. I am not certain why I felt this way...maybe it was how they traveled...?
I did rate 4/5, while the writing is the best I have seen, beautiful really, I feel like I've been at the 'battle' for a while. Or maybe it was the visions of them that I feel like I have been here a while. I am ready to face this battle! Rawr. I like the end twist, which makes me feel like it will be a fresh start going forward. Even if it has multiple POV next time too, it will all be in the same time frame.
Honestly, I do not know if the novella would be better alone or not. I think it was just hard to center myself with past events on so many characters. That is just me, and take that with a grain of salt. Each part was really cool to read, though. Who cares, its a book we got some pretty cool things happening! Considering all the author went through in the last year, this is pure magic. I mean, the way the words just come out and flow...gosh. There is nothing 'not' to like here. I know many people will enjoy the POV parts, but I am not a fan of so many, so my rating is just so/back events. That is not the authors fault and I bought it knowing that. For me, it took me out of the moment (but so what? that is like one person right?) She did great, and I think you guys will love it. My opinions are just crumbs really.
