My new favourite yoga book
By Eze Marquez
Im not sure there is more you can ask for from a single book. What initially caught my eye was the sheer number of poses. 2100 poses in a single book? To be honest having read other yoga books I didn't even know there was anything near 2100 yoga poses. Most other books stop at like 100-200. So I started flipping through the book. The pictures are clear, of high quality and extremely well organized. But this isn't just a photo book. Each picture has is described, has its name in Sanskrit and English and the part I like, it tells me which muscle groups are targeted. I might sound simple but if you do the poses, or at least attempt to, now I can get an idea if im doing it right. So that's when I decided I had to buy the book. There is a section detailing the limbs of yoga. A section that helps you with training to get into the more difficult poses. And this is what has jumped out to me in day 1, I can't wait to keep exploring the book and using it to help me grow my yoga practice.

Excellent encyclopedia of yoga
By Waterlight
This is an excellent encyclopedia of yoga poses. Every pose has a brief description, a color photo and the name in the English and Sanskrit. All poses are in color using a variety of models, male and female, whose bodies seem to twist in amazing ways. The color photos are large and clear enough to see what is going on--and therefore can be followed. They are all set on a white background. There is an index in the back for both the English popular names and for the Sanskrit names also. Most of the popular names I looked up were there but I could not find a couple of them but I can understand how popular names could vary somewhat. The book is very easy to use and one can go through it and see what other possible poses are there. But before you purchase--think encyclopedia--it is very large and of course comprehensive and physically heavy--you won't be traveling with it. The price was very reasonable for a book of this quality and scale. For the dedicated yoga practitioner, this would be a particularly useful book and a very nice gift too.

The book is like an encyclopedia
By Lizzieeroo
I really loooooove this book! I'm a yoga teacher and sometimes I feel uninspired of what poses to teach, but book has so many varations of poses that I wouldn't have thought of myself! The book is like an encyclopedia; it's thick and solid! I was surprised at how many pages were in this book! I was contemplating buying the kindle version but I'm glad I bough the actual book because there's so much to see! And I personally think it's easier to have a physical book when it comes to "text book" style books; I usually keep kindle editions to stories or novels.

Evolution and Gender: Why It Matters for Contemporary Life, by Rosemary L. Hopcroft

Offering new research and analysis on the relation between gender and evolution, this book explains conflict between the sexes and the frequent emergence and stubborn continuation of patriarchal regimes that serve to control the behavior of women in societies around the world, both past and present. Women and men are different, on average. But that does not mean they are unequal. Indeed, understanding average differences is key to the full realization of equality in health care and other dimensions of social life.

Hopcroft shows that gender differences in physiology, psychology, and behavior can be traced to slight differences in evolved traits between men and women. These differences exist because of sex differences in investment in offspring, which meant that, in the environment of evolution, some adaptive problems were more important for men to solve than for women, and vice versa. For men, the most important adaptive problem to solve was that of finding a mate. Men who did not solve this problem are not our ancestors. For women, the most important adaptive problem to solve was that of successfully bearing and raising children. Women who did not solve this problem are not our ancestors. These small differences underlie all the differences described in the book, including sex differences in mate preferences, physiology, cognition, aggression, status striving, and emotional experience. It can also help explain the differential treatment of children by parents, the differential success of boys and girls in modern schools, and sex differences in style of communication.

Review

"A timely and important book. In an age of political correctness, this work represents a bold challenge to comfortable prejudices with a systematic and comprehensive review of the scientific evidence on the extent to which aspects of gender have a biological basis. Even the fiercest of critics will have difficulty ignoring this rich, compelling, and balanced analysis of what underlies the differences between males and females."

Alexandra Maryanski, Professor of Sociology, University of California at Riverside

"Evolution and Gender is a breath of fresh air in a field all too inclined to obfuscation and sterile incantations of 'patriarchy'. Rosemary Hopcroft actually explains, without excusing it, the ubiquitous tendency toward control and oppression of women in human societies. With this book she provides a scientific basis and necessary corrective for any serious understanding of gender differences and gender relations."

François Nielsen, Professor of Sociology, University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill

"In a down-to-earth way, Hopcroft's book walks readers through a dazzling variety of both old and especially new scientific evidence of how males and females behave in different ways (on average, of course). Her book pushes scientific understanding of the sexes, especially regarding behavior, to new heights."

Lee Ellis, Professor of Sociology, University of Malaya

"The sociologist Rosemary Hopcroft has compiled and analyzed an expansive body of thought and evidence about gender differences, their origins, how they affect our lives. The skill with which she weaves together social scientific and biological knowledge about female-male differences and presents it in a highly accessible manner makes this book the envy of any serious scholar who is committed to advancing our understanding of one of the most important suite of traits that makes us human. In fact, this kind of knowledge might even help guide us in constructing more just and equitable societies in which all humans deserve to live."

Richard Machalek, Professor of Sociology, University of Wyoming

About the Author
Rosemary L. Hopcroft is Professor of Sociology at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. She has published widely in the areas of comparative and historical sociology and evolution, biology, and society in journals that include the American Sociological Review, American Journal of Sociology, and Social Forces. She is the author of Sociology: A Bio-Social Introduction (Paradigm 2010).

Let's just move society backwards!?
By Douglas Albrecht
OK - so, I didn't read the whole book.
In general, it seemed like the message delivered was more of a divider than a uniter. While many would say would say we should be striving for equality, this book seemed to provide a view of making it a point of our differences and delivered no message of hope. Beleive it or not, not everyone is a victim.

Maybe I missed something.

Pretty Bad
By Jason
Was a required reading, hence I rented it. This book is pretty horrendous. The quality of the writings are terrible, not something I would consider Master's level reading, yet I had to read it in a Master's level program. Atrocious is also a word that comes to mind when remembering the readings I had to do. Would Not recommend to buy, perhaps you can 'borrow' a friends copy for your semester and save the dollars on the rental. This book is not even worth a rental. No new knowledge is gained from reading this book.

I am a fanboi. I read his blog posts. So, take this with a grain of salt.

Mr. Modesitt writes in what I consider three major styles:
* Hard Fantasy -- Recluce Series, Spellsong -- magic with rules and energy costs
* Hard Science -- Solar Express -- lots of physics and science
* Soft Science -- Parafaith series -- in space, but the characters do 'strange' stuff

This is very much in the Hard Science realm. If you are primarily a Fantasy reader, you will probably not like this story.

We are following three different characters in this novel:
* Dr. Wong -- an astronomer on the far-side of the moon.
* Captain Tavoian -- a FusEx (space) pilot
* The culture -- personified by various news feeds

How you feel about this novel will correlate very closely about how you feel about the news feeds. Dr. Wong and Capt. Tavoian are very career focused and are written that way. I believe these two thematic choices drive the acceptance or rejection of the novel. Again -- read the free sample.

I liked the story, all three of the characters and the discussion between Dr. Wong and Capt. Tavoian. This is probably because I am dating again as an adult and their attempt to build a relationship in email resonates with me.

Mr. Modesitt explains all this: http://www.lemodesittjr.com/2015/11/17/another-reason-for-pseudonyms/ So again, you'll only have yourself to blame.

If I have not discouraged you at this point. I would suggest spending the money to buy the book and enjoy it sooner rather than later. I am happy with my purchase and I'm going to suggest it to all my hard SF friends.

Ponderous and pointless
By Tghu Verd
Two characters, separated by distance and the weirdest communications limitations ever for a future-set sci fi novel are not enough to support the inherent mystery that is supposed to drive the plot. And especially as Modesitt has done this better before.

So, we have the "discuss morals by letter" dynamic from The Imager Portfolio coupled with the inscrutable alien tech from The Eternity Artefact. But where those novels have a cast of characters, here we only have two...and they are pretty bland, for all that we get into their heads. Both are essentially friendless, solitary hermit types who do not do much except think and send poetic quotes to each other. Fair enough, Modesitt limits their physical environments, but if that was supposed to concentrate the essence of the point he was trying to make, well it failed for me.

Not much actually happens in the main - even as really interesting things are happening offscreen but we only get snippets of them - and for some inane and not really explained reason, off-earth communication does not contain images or video. It's text only, like we're back in the 70's. Indeed, I wondered whether this was a reissue of an earlier work but other aspects were up to date, so I guess not.

Now I expect a degree of ponderous discourse in a Modesitt book. But this seems lazy and ultimately pointless. The whole thing is emotionless, even as the world teeters on the brink of oblivion and people die. So, too expensive and too tedious, I cannot recommend it.

Rendevous with alien object
By Henry L. Lazarus
L. E. Modesitt, Jr borrows from the classic Rendevous with Rama for a tale set a century from now that is unlike anything he has written before. Alayna Wong is on a post-doc as the only person at COFAR, the large telescope on the ar side of the moon. She spends her time doing research, repairing the giant array, and writing to her parents and the pilot who piloted her to the moon, Christopher Tavoian. Then an object on a cometary orbit, turns out to be manufactured. At a time when the Sianese are flexing their muscle in space and threatening India, Noram stands apart. Chris is selected to investigate the object using robots on a solo expedition. The Sianese launch a month later with a larger crew and actually land on the object, labeled Solar Express (hard from Tor) because it is actually moving faster than predicted. This is a quiet tale of normal scientists working with a strange object. Despite little action, I found the tale fascinating. I hope it gets nominated for some awards. The Year That Defined American Journalism: 1897 and the Clash of Paradigms, by W. Joseph Campbell

The Year that Defined American Journalism explores the succession of remarkable and decisive moments in American journalism during 1897 – a year of significant transition that helped redefine the profession and shape its modern contours. This defining year featured a momentous clash of paradigms pitting the activism of William Randolph Hearst's participatory 'journalism of action' against the detached, fact-based antithesis of activist journalism, as represented by Adolph Ochs of the New York Times, and an eccentric experiment in literary journalism pursued by Lincoln Steffens at the New York Commercial-Advertiser. Resolution of the three-sided clash of paradigms would take years and result ultimately in the ascendancy of the Times' counter-activist model, which remains the defining standard for mainstream American journalism.

The Year That Defined American Journalism introduces the year-study methodology to mass communications research and enriches our understanding of a pivotal moment in media history.

Review

'W. Joseph Campbell's compelling account of 1897 illuminates a decisive moment in the annals of American journalism―a time not unlike our own―when profound cultural, political and technological change challenged conventional wisdom and opened up new opportunities for journalistic theory and practice. The Year That Defined American Journalism provides a fresh perspective on a period that would shape the future of newsgathering in United States and in doing so makes a significant contribution to media historiography.' - Kevin Howley, Associate Professor of Media Studies at DePauw University

'This is a book about clashing journalistic cultures, featuring swashbuckling publishers and reporters.  It pits the likes of Hearst, Ochs and Steffins against one another and examines issues we still grapple with today:  participatory journalism vs. detached reporting.' -Charles Overby, Chairman and CEO of The Freedom Forum

'Campbell's book is worth the price of admission all by itself for the author's description of Steffens and his impact on journalism. But there are many more reasons to read this book, including Campbell's ability to offer a time machine through his vivid writing that transports readers right into the middle of the sights, sounds and smells of 1897 New York City.' - H-Net Reviews

'Campbell's book is an enjoyable read for journalism historians and students of the craft.' - American Journalism

'fluently written, knowledgeable about journalism (it offers, for example, a good discussion of the halftone illustrations issue) and well researched.' - Early Popular Visual Culture

About the Author
W. Joseph Campbell is an Associate Professor at American University's School of Communcation. He is the author of three other books, including Yellow Journalism: Puncturing the Myths, Defining the Legacies.

Castoriadis's Ontology: Being and Creation (Perspectives in Continental Philosophy), by Suzi Adams

This book is the first systematic reconstruction of Castoriadis' philosophical trajectory. It critically interprets the internal shifts in Castoriadis' ontology through reconsideration of the ancient problematic of 'human institution' (nomos) and 'nature' (physis), on the one hand, and the question of 'being' and 'creation', on the other. Unlike the order of physis, the order of nomos played no substantial role in the development of western thought: The first part of the book suggests that Castoriadis sought to remedy this with his elucidation of the social-historical as the region of being elusive to the determinist imaginary of inherited philosophy. This ontological turn was announced with the publication of his magnum opus The Imaginary Institution of Society (first published in 1975) which is reconstructed as Castoriadis' long journey through nomos via four interconnected domains: ontological, epistemological, anthropological, and hermeneutical respectively. With the aid of archival sources, the second half of the book reconstructs a second ontological shift in Castoriadis' thought that occurred during the 1980s. Here it argues that Castoriadis extends his notion of 'ontological creation' beyond the human realm and into nature. This move has implications for his overall ontology and signals a shift towards a general ontology of creative physis. The increasing ontological importance of physis is discussed further in chapters on objective knowledge, the living being, and philosophical cosmology. It suggests that the world horizon forms an inescapable interpretative context of cultural articulation - in the double sense of Merleau-Ponty's mise en forme du monde - in which physis can be elucidated as the ground of possibility, as well as a point of culmination for nomos in the circle of interpretative creation. The book contextualizes Castoriadis' thought within broader philosophical and sociological traditions. In particular it situates his thought within French phenomenological currents that take either an ontological and/or a hermeneutical turn. It also places a hermeneutic of modernity - that is, an interpretation that emphasizes the ongoing dialogue between romantic and enlightenment articulations of the world - at the centre of reflection. Castoriadis' reactivation of classical Greek sources is reinterpreted as part of the ongoing dialogue between the ancients and the moderns, and more broadly, as part of the interpretative field of tensions that comprises modernity.

Review

Suzi Adams is the first to examine and evaluate Castoriadis' ontological and, broadly speaking, anthropological thinking in the full complexity of its splendor. Hers is a gesture of Ariadne, because she makes the self-ascribed labyrinthine architecture of Castoriadis' thought meaningfully tangible. Such precise and yet expansive interrogation is nowadays altogether rare.-Stathis Gourgouris

Quite simply, this type and level of analytic work on Castoriadis is overdue.-Kyoo Lee

Suzi Adams and Castoriadis
By stone
As a non-philosopher with a largely science background I found this a wonderfully comprehensive and mainly lucid detailed summary Castoriadis' work - a great achievement. Castoriadis must be among our greatest recent philosophers and is one of the most relevant to science and anthropology as well as politics and theology. The centrality of human creativity and invention is an essential theme and has been largely ignored by philosophers. Castoriadis is mostly relatively easy to read and has a quirky sense of humor, with a highly original and prolific output concerning the being of humanity and the natural world. Suzi Adams presents his thinking and conclusions, including many obscure works and others not in English, and adds her own incisive insights and critiques, extending Castoriadis to his limits and beyond in a solid and thought-provoking way. I was very grateful for the inclusion of the later works and thinking, which were not well known to me, and the way she brings together strains running through many different publications and interviews. The implications of Castoriadis' thought - and her own - are deep and highly significant to the betterment of the whole community - a must read (though sometimes difficult - I confess the meaning of some of the last chapter escaped me) for political leaders, business executives and theologians in particular. As a non-philosopher unfamiliar with other languages I would have appreciated a glossary of the abundant French and German terms. This work deserves to be widely read and acted upon, but would also need a summary of Castoriadis' terminology for those who have not read him.
