Perfect compliment to the frescoes series

If you've loved any or all of the five luscious volumes on Italian frescoes published by Abbeville or even if you haven't seen them, you'll love this stunning look at the mosaics that, for the most part, came before the painting. This is a fabulous tour from Sicily to Ravenna, with beautiful photos of the mosaics and just enough commentary. Poeschek gives us a comprehensive tour of each cycle and a bit of the history and various interpretations (well footnoted), but doesn't get bogged down in academic details. This is definately a book for the art aficionado, not the professional art historian. If you've seen any of these mosaics you'll find a wonderful reminder of their beauty (and learn more than the guidebook told you) and if you haven't, this is a perfect armchair tour with the same type of high-quality, well-selected photos that grace the frescoe books. The highlights include:
-Cathedral of Monreale (at 85,000 sq ft the largest cycle in Italy)and other great cycles in Sicily
-San Marco, Venice
-San Vitale and the other major sites in Ravenna
-Roman sites including Santa Maria Maggiore, Santa Maria in Trastevere, San Clemete and the incredible Santi Comas and Damiano among others.
-Florence Baptistry

Buy it if you can
By God book
It is a funtastic book. We love it. There are many mosaics that you simply can't see when you are in Italy & even if you are there one can't see all the details as well as in the book. Not to mention the fact that you can open the book any time but you can't get to these mosaics any time you like.
