Review
5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent reading, January 12, 2013By Donna Jean - This review is from: A Convocation of Kings (The Coming Storm) (Kindle Edition)The authors writing skills are exciting, informative, very creative. I started with The Coming Storm and read both books within the week. Could not put it down and was angry when I had to wait a whole day to get the A Convocation of Kings. Love paranormal, but not particularly fond of wizards, find it frustrating. In the case of these two books, I was thoroughly entertained, job well done.
From the Author
A Convocation of Kings is the sequel to The Coming Storm, but can be read as a standalone novel on its own.
From the Inside Flap
A weird, ululating baying sounded behind him, drawing him from his reverie. He hadn't thought he had much time, but he hadn't thought to have so little. They'd found his scent far more quickly than he'd expected. With all he'd heard and seen over his long life though, that sound sent chills up even his spine.
It was a new thing - a cry such as he'd never heard - he who'd lived far longer than any other Elf, and far, far longer than any man. He'd known fear many times. This, whatever it was that sought him, was different.
Talesin straightened in the saddle and turned to look behind him.
He stared, stunned, his sight offended by what hunted him.
Low things, they were larger in size but more upright than the weasel-like kobolds, little more than a mass of ugly snarling teeth and claws, vaguely man-like for all their four-legged loping stride, with greasy black fur. They were quick, racing behind him on his trail in pursuit.
In all his years he'd seen nothing like them.
With one hand wrapped in Chacai's mane for balance, Talesin let loose a mage-bolt with the other.
It struck in their midst, bowled the creatures over to a chorus of shrieks of fury and growling howls. Then they scrambled back to their feet to race after him again. It stunned him that they took the mage-bolt almost in stride and recovered so quickly.
These were new things and he hadn't thought to see anything new of their like again.
New creatures of the Borderlands.
The situation was far worse than he'd feared, than he could have imagined.
Dark wizards were at work once more among the creatures of the borderlands. That was yet another source of horror.
Both Elf and wizard, he was old, far older than any other Elf had been or had any right to be. Elves were long-lived, wizards as well, and both had stretched Talesin's life-span far beyond any other in Elven history.
In all that time he'd seen much, horrors such as no one, Elf, Dwarf or man, should ever see, but nothing like these. They were like a pack of hunched, misshapen wolves but there were many, many more of them. Looking behind was like watching darkness boil over the earth in a thick gleaming flood. He had a glimpse of something that raced behind those low creatures as a hunter of men would ride to foxhounds. The creature looked something like a horse but wasn't a horse...and the rider...
Even Talesin quailed at the sight.
Age tells on all if one has years enough, although Elves didn't show it as men did. He feared his mage-bolts didn't have the power they once had. Nor his sword arm when it came time for it. With his magic and his sword, though, he tried to hold them off long enough. It was all he could do.
Long sharp claws shredded hide and flesh as the creatures closed on them. Blood flew.
Talesin couldn't Heal Chacai on the fly, and himself not at all, he could only hope the valiant animal could hold out long enough to save them both. Or at least pass their warning to those who must hear it...
Their frantic, desperate flight was a losing battle he knew, but they fought it, he and Chacai together, for as hard and as long as they might.

Disappointment squared
By Amazon Customer
I read the first book in the series and got really excited. Got this book immediately after I was done with the Coming Storm and I felt like someone sucker punched me!!!
The description of Ms. Douglas says that she is a genre-crosser. I personally think that she should PICK A GENRE AND STICK WITH IT!!! Especially when we are talking about a series of books. The first book was a nice fantasy novel while this one turned into a romance novel, including drawn out scenes of sex and everything that goes with it. I do understand that the love and connection between different characters is an important part of the plot and the whole universe she created, but SERIOUSLY!!! I was skipping large chunks of the book just to get back to the actual plot (that was still pretty interesting).
In the end I did finish the book because I wanted to find out the end of a story I was following for weeks at this point, but I will NEVER EVER read another book by this author!!!

Two for one review
By jmrivera
I read The Coming Storm ans enjoyed the book and the characters so much that I immediately bought the sequel, A Convocation of Kings. In the first book I was so happy to see that she could write an exciting adventure story without resorting to the use of descriptive sex scenes or foul language. In the second book, four of our heroes find wonderful life partners among their group. However I was disappointed that too much time was spent describing the intimate relations of the main two characters. Once or even a couple of graphic descriptions pretty much fill the reader in on how well suited they are to each other. I love romance, but I do not need to be in bed with the couple to appreciate how in love they are. It seems a form of lazy, repetitive writing, not holding up to her earlier promise. Otherwise, it was another good story with like-able, admirable heroes and hideously horrible villains. I will consider reading more of her books.

Intriguing Conclusion to A Fantasy!
By Marydon
As the second book, in a fantasy series, this is an excellent conclusion. I found the story well developed and holds the reader's attention. I fell in love with the characters. The "bad guy" had the proper amount of suspense and intrigue. Well written and fun, hard to put down. Congratulations to the author, I will probably read other books by you. Thanks for such excellent entertainment.
