"I found my gold,Longarm,and this is it."

I dug into my "stock" of past Longarm's and chose this episode from February 2001. Like the other reviewer,I found this episode quite different from the norm. Generally,I like best ,those sagas which have the least amount of mystery to them. This one is a little different,as Longarm is in direct pursuit of one "unknown" killer. Just when it looks like he has the killer in his sights;he has to start all over again.Unlike most mysteries,where there are lots of suspects and motives,this story stays right on target and the killer is found.No need to do a wrap-up of suspects ,motives and analyzing of clues.
It is a good story,well constructed. There are several,different and well developed characters. There is however;little in the way of fast-action shootouts,local history,and little in the way of great one-liners or colorful Old West conversation.
Overall,most would find it a good western;but somewhat different than the better episodes of the Longarm series.

Books in the Longarm series are usually either very good or very bad. Occasionally I come across one in the middle. Longarm books are written by many different people and all of the books are attributed to a presumably non-existent person named Tabor Evans. Because some of the Longarm authors write like eighth graders, its dangerous to buy a Longarm without first reading a review by a trustworthy reviewer. The author of Mountain Bandit is a good author. If he or she had been allowed to create a new hero, I believe the book would have been very enjoyable. Unfortunately, to those few of us who read all of the good Longarm books, the Longarm of Mountain Bandit does not quite match our image of the "real" Longarm. You might give this four stars if you have not been exposed to the best of the Longarm books.
